Abbot Do raised an eyebrow. "Man's always in danger. But you'd do right to whisper it in Lady Seppun's ear. And maybe Lord Otomo's, to boot."

Stonily, his frame bent by age and time, Abbot Do likewise stood steps behind Chou-sin and delivered his own silent prayers, that the Fortune of Fire and Thunder would embrace this brother of heroes and favor him as one who walked the way.

Do shakes his head.

Do nods.

"Lead the way," he says.

Do snorts another laugh.

"Could be," he says. "Could be from the Seppun, too. Nobody can plant themselves in it if it's not there, right?"

"You sound positively imperial," Do observes, dryly. "Maybe you should--by the way, where is the Throne? Even empty, it should stand there."

"Some people's backs, at the moment," Do says, motioning with his chin towards the scrubbing Cranes and the skittering Seppun. "How many of them should be bending to that wind, really?

"And maybe a snake or four could get straightened out, too."

Do fixes Jinkan with a look.

"You sure you're not a Togashi?" he asks.

"I'm from the Order of Osano-Wo, Mirumoto-san," Do says, "and I'm here because somebody has to be on hand to set things straight some others try to make crooked."

Do snorts a laugh.

"I'm sure there's some crop that will grow well in a field this heavily manured," he says.

The comment about violence, he does not address.

At present.

"I don't see that happening," Do replies. "Although it's been said that it does not take two to make war."

The abbot returns the bow.

"Do," he says.

"Depends on the Order and the vows," he adds. "I doubt the Dragon are strangers to that, with the ise zumi and all."

At last, Do steps forward with a grace that confounds his awkward height. With great care but with a directness that borders upon speed, he reaches into his robe and draws out a pair of incense sticks and sets them in the lining of the coffin. Do folded his hands, choosing not to direct fire at that one.

"Who could refuse a guest praying in the place extended to her?" posits Chou-sin. "But if there is a concern about legality, then Daidoji-bugyo is surely the one here best informed about it." He turns to her, bowing slightly. "Oh, inform Daidoji-bugyo about the prayers," Do mocked Chou-sin quietly ...

Chou-sin gives a small smile and a nod to his aide.

"What you said about humility, there, Jihen, was pretty good. Keep it up." It seemed Do also approved.

Do frowned. "Well, you got to the right answer, but as usual you presented it all wrong. Discomfort's part of the nat'ral order, 'cause all existence is suffering. It's not something you do but you'd rather not. Without the "discomfort" of facing Emma-O now, in our flesh, we labor under the illusion...

Do's eye twitched, but he could detect no error so far. He remained stoic, like granite.
