Would the ritual count as a ward per Yogo Affinities? The School has a bit of a loose definition and technically, wards can be used to seal something in.

The restraint part, yes. The binding, no.

And another question for the ritual. Borrowing a Phoenix delegate ishiken was mentioned. Are there delegation NPCs with earth or water affinity we could fill in a few holes with?

On the Delegations list, viewtopic.php?f=13&t=35, if the character is listed as a shugenja and the main Clan shugenja School has that Affinity available, and it hasn't already been spoken for (which, as you note, one of the Phoenix was), then yes. There are also a couple of MC shugenja who might help, if you ask real nice like.

But we're somewhat covered in her likely elements (though her pool is possibly higher) Where there's that potential overlap, I'm assuming we can have all the shugenja in the world participating, but it's just one per element per section of the ritual rolling? Would those extras bolster a 'main' person, or just add the fluff of a lot more voices?

Shintaro's most likely Water, yes.

It's the number of Elements involved, not the number of rollers involved, that reduces the TN.

Akane's not the only MC shugenja available, however.

3) A Demonstration of Power: You must successfully cast a spell to some dramatic effect. Your spell should not inflict damage or otherwise cause mayhem–-you’re supposed to be driving away evil spirits here, not making Lord Ikoma sad. Your spellcasting roll must exceed a TN of 30 to be deemed powerful enough to be added to the Sortition list.

We're choosing a specific spell to cast. Are we aiming to have enough raises to set a TN of 30? (i.e. using Commune with a standard TN of 10, you'd need 4 raises (and thus 4 void to make that many)

Or just aiming for the dice to hit the big number regardless of the actual spell TN?

And what affect do Free Raises have here, as most schools have a keyword category that offers a free raise. Adds 5 to the roll? Reduces that TN 30 to 25?

You'd need to have enough Raises to cast at TN30 if the TN for the spell isn't already at that level ("anybody can Commune; show us something special"). This does supersede the normal "uses of Raises" in the spell descriptions for this purpose.

We'll treat Free Raises as adding 5 to your casting roll.
