Day 13: The First Rule of Ritual Club...

OOC planning!

A number of folks have been informed and involved in chasing the mysteries of elemental imbalance, the Ningster, approaching plague and the like. Because it is a truth universally acknowledged that an unsettled succession must draw other troubles in its wake...or something like that.

So, a ritual is being planned to bind the gaki. Details still in development. But one mechanical element is in play that I wanted to have gathered someplace vs. scattered in PMs. Plus, if any more people add in, the PM system won't allow more recipients.
In terms of steps forward: you're going to want to make Spellcraft checks to determine how the ritual is conducted precisely. That's going to be a Spellcraft/Intelligence check of 30. If folks want to collaborate on that roll, everyone who breaks a 15 on a Spellcraft/Intelligence check on this subject can lower the TN of the primary roll by 5.
Hoshiko's Day12 ME, research!: Spellcraft/Int | 4k3 ⇒ 24 (TN: 15)
Also a thread now if folks feel like entering a late day pop-up. XD viewtopic.php?f=44&t=1085

From PM Kiuchi's Spellcraft roll

[edit to add] planning for Day 13 ME meetup.

Also: credit to Cearnach for ‘Ningster’ XD

Edit to add details for ease of finding.
This ritual will require shugenja to make a spellcasting roll, base TN 55, to restrain the spirit. Each participating shugenja may make one roll and only one roll. The TN is lowered by 5 for each Element represented among the spellcasting rolls being made. (IE, if we have all five Elements, the TN for each of the rolls becomes 30.) In theory, one shugenja could do this, but it would be hard.

Success will restrain the spirit.

Binding him will require the presence of a vessel or other object suitable to retain the spirit (this is fluffy; let the PCs have their head on this). As with the restraint, a number of shugenja not participating in the restraint will need to make spellcasting rolls, base TN 55, to force the spirit into the object. Again, each shugenja may make one and only one such roll. Again, the TN is lowered by 5 for each Element represented among the casting rolls, as well as by 1 for each successful Raise made on the restraint roll. Again, in theory, one shugenja could do this, but it would be hard.

Success will bind the spirit in the object.

Failure to restrain or to bind the spirit means it will escape. It will attempt to possess one PC present, chosen randomly. This will be a Contested Willpower roll; add Honor to the result of the roll. If the spirit wins, it will be bad news for the character; if the character wins, the spirit will flee, presumably to possess someone else.

Bringing in Ancestral Swords will lower either the restraint or binding TN by 10 per sword. It will also make the Champion a possible host for the spirit.
Scheduled for D14 EN...at the mine in the Hinterlands (tentative location)

Object for binding: We have Shinnosuke's donation of a mask, unless there are other offers? (tentative: mask locked in a box)

Restraining: 55 - 20 = 35 (2 swords for -20 = 15) (Crane and Phoenix for the birds of a feather theme duo)

Air: Hoshiko
Earth: Sadako? (Aiko also posited for Earth) (NPC)
Fire: Kiuchi with Ward bonus for affinity
Water: Another delegation NPC --Gusai Hoshiu
Void: empty

Binding: 55-25 = 30 (1 sword for -10 = 20) (Let's put Kaguya and her sword here since I think the other pair will get along better than either will with Kaguya)
Air: Masaki
Earth: Shiori
Fire: Sanjuro
Water: Kitsu Shintaro (NPC)
Void: Isawa Yoshio (Phoenix delegation NPC)

( If I'm mis-matching someone to their best ring, let me know. We could use someone else on Earth and Water. Also, I filled the binding portion vs. the restraining one based on a coin flip. If others feel differently, let me know! )

Swords as much as I currently know:
Scorpion (yes), Crane (yes), Phoenix (yes), Lion (not sure...Sanae has options), Hantei (no, seems risky),

Dragon Champion: "not a sword" But will be something.

I'll post Yuna's roll right after dayflip. Great to have a place to post it.

IC:
"Yuna recalls many conversations about spellcraft ritual research from her Ageki family and the Agasha researchers there. She suggests several additions to the ritual to particularly draw on the strength of the earth kami to bind and hold."

Yuna made the 15, so -5 to TN for ritual

Using a means to tag this thread, Shiori tried to chip in here but failed. She'll have better luck tomorrow with finalizing the ritual!

Yuna clued Jihen into this during the LE, so if everyone is cool with it I can help on D13.

I roll pretty high on Spellcraft. (9k8)

Sanjuro recalls some elements of the ritual from his studies.

Masaki did some research on possibilities for the Ritual on D12 LE - I'm assuming on her own desk, if that makes sense.

D12 LE - Spellcraft/Int for help with Ritual. VP, TN 15. | 5k4 ⇒ 21 (TN: 15)

Are we doing a thread on D13 to finish the ritual? From the previous talks Shiori will do the honours, right? I got some additional moral support to give when we have a threas ready XD

From PMs ME looked good for that. If folks are raring to go, go ahead and set a thread. Otherwise I’ll have Hoshiko do so when I’m home.

Tagging in, even though Ryusei is spectacularly ill-equipped to be much help  But he promised Yuna he'd have her back in the event of her back needing having :P

Checking in with GMs to be sure we're ok adding a pile of people to the spellcraft section. But getting the thread going in the meantime. Those who've been brought in via others can find the ritual planning here: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1100. Note that there hasn't been an announcement (nor is likely to be, I suspect. Not really what you shout about in court.

This isn't the ritual (unless it suddenly is?) Just putting it together, space for Commune if folks still have questions to ask the kami, and rp around the topic.

... Wait.

Ryusei can contribute here!

He can monkey with spellcasting TNs

lol

Hopefully unneeded for Commune at the current IR ranks. But for the ritual itself, depending on what we're doing, that may be handy.

As noted, checking in on that, since the PM was initially working on the assumption of group of size x, and I want to check that I'm not outrunning GM intent there. But, given time and life, good to have it recorded if the answer is yes.

In lieu of an ishiken I can probably fluff some Voidy thingamabobs in the ritual if necessary.

I don't think we care how many folks contribute to the research portion. I wouldn't throw away successful rolls, personally. As for the ritual itself, you'll see how it works when you roll the final research check. It's all pretty clear.

Thanks.

The question then becomes when (with not a lot of days left to schedule) Though this may also be clear when the final check is made.

"There are many pious traditions observed with sumo, so I imagine this would appease them in normal circumstances. Even with all of that rumbling and stepping, I imagine it would have been equally entertaining for them." She supposed in the Phoenix shugenja kami appeasement-leaning sense, that was true.

Shiori was still full from the gathering earlier this afternoon, enough that she skipped supper without regretting it. That said, the appearance of the dumplings did make her curious enough to fetch out her own chopsticks to sample. They all came from the same servants in the kyuden but it did make her wonder if there was a difference in kitchens. "I attempted to recruit Moshi Akane to the effort, or at least warn her. From what she gathered in passing, she also did say as much as well."

*** [For the interest of time]

Once everyone was gathered, Shiori would piece together everyone's portion of the research while narrowing down the variables so that they could seek out a tailored answer for this problem they had. They, being the future of the Empire, it seemed.

Roll
Day 13, Mid Evening, Spellcraft/Intelligence: TN0, with 3 raises called. Void spent for +1k1 | 7k5 ⇒ 30 (TN: 15)
