[D7 EA-D12 LA] EVENT: The Sumai Tournament

The Sumai Tournament

There are 10 san’yaku wrestlers at the forefront of the Makuuchi level of sumai wrestling in Rokugan. This is the highest level of sumai in the Empire, with wrestlers having earned the right to the honorific ‘-zeki’ when being addressed.

It is extremely prestigious to be greeted by a sumai wrestler at a tournament, because it signals to those assembled that one is of the foremost rank in the Empire. Needless to say, the entire Banzuke, or roster of wrestlers, would have been involved in the ceremonial greeting of the Empress. Her death has rendered that impossible. However, there are other VIPs at court, some of whom could certainly make use of the cachet a sumai’s regard might bring. And if that sumai were to win, well, the boost to his name would likewise elevate his patron.

You have from now until the sumai championship (5 full days) to influence a sumai to bestow their greeting to a Wind of your choice. The Wind will receive Campaign Influence commensurate with the rank of the sumai, as follows:

Yokozuna: 35 points
Ozeki: 30 points
Sekiwake: 20 points
Komosubi: 15 points

The Wind will also receive half of the Glory each wrestler receives for winning a match.

You can persuade a wrestler by making a post to this thread in which you interact with that wrestler, and in which you successfully make a check to influence them. A success on that check is 1 influence point. Every 2 called raises earns another. This post does take up a timeslot, and you should indicate in your post which timeslot you are using. A particular wrestler can carry on multiple conversations per timeslot, so do not worry about overlap with other players.

Each wrestler will have their own difficulties and rolls. To learn what they are, you should probably look into who the wrestler is and what he’s about by making a Jiujutsu/Intelligence or a Lore: Heraldry/Intelligence roll to remember the year’s hype, tn 20. Precise Memory applies. Please post such rolls to your PF for a response.

Alternatively, you could ask around with a Courtier/Awareness or Jiujutsu/Awareness check, tn 15. If you are asking around, please make sure that you cite where, in character, you have made your check while linking it in your pf.

The Banzuke is as follows:

South
Yokozuna: Hida Matabei (“Miyagino”), of Sunda Mizu Mura [6 Tatsuya, 4 Gorobei]
Ozeki: Daidoji Eichi (“Onogawa”), of Mura Sabishii Toshi [2 Noriko; 2 Tomaru]
Sekiwake: Yogo Natsuo (“Raiden”), of Ryoko Owari Toshi [20 Noriko; 15 Tomaru]
Komosubi: Hiruma Genseki (“Kashiwado”), of Shiro Hiruma; [18 Tomaru; 16 Tatsuya]
Heichi Ai (“Onomatsu”), of Shiro Heichi. [7 Tatsuya; 7 Noriko]

North
Yokozuna: Asako Haruo (“Tanikaze”), of Golden Barley village [6 Noriko; 5 Tatsuya]
Ozeki: Ikoma Hana (“Tamagaki”), of Foal’s Folly Village [18 Tomaru; 11 Noriko]
Sekiwake: Ichiro Masaya (“Tsurugizan”), of Fist of Might Village [11 Tomaru; 1 Noriko]
Komosubi: Matsu Yasunari (“Hidenoyama”), of Dawn’s Glory Village; [2 Noriko; 1 Tomaru,]
Togashi Konosuke (“Inazuma”), of the High House of Light. [8 Tomaru, 6 Noriko, 1 Gorobei]

We will update this post at day-flip with the current influence levels for each wrestler.

Shiori paid a visit to the Old Man's Stump when it opened. She tried to pry some information regarding the Crab sumo from Sunda Mizu Mura. She thought that it would be an easy stop to grab some easy gossip. However, it seemed that she only managed to find a patch of locals who were more interested in lamenting about their recent woes than talking about some sumo match that happened what seemed to be forever ago.

Honoka realised that there was a pretty impressive gathering for the performance, and took advantage of that to catch some people to talk sumai after the performance ended and before too many had left. Being in the performance likely helped a little.

Masaki went to the Old Man's Stump at about the same time as Shiori, meeting her there.

She had a bit more luck than Shiori trying to gather some information on the southern Yokozuna, though.

That would give them something to talk about during the evening!

Daichi spent some of the time in the Afternoon chatting with one of the Sumai. He wasn't an expert on the sport, but he knew a little more than most apparently. Or maybe it was just because it was a pretty common topic among crab bushi. Either way he managed to remember a few things that may be of note.

Yuna reflected on D7, putting her excellent memory to the test.

What had she heard about Asako Haruo (“Tanikaze”), of Golden Barley village? She had spent a good bit of time in Asako lands, so it seemed a good place to start.

Kenji was curious about Sumai but no expert. He heard about an Ikoma taking part and considered that might mean home field advantage! So he spent a bit of time trying to recall everything he had heard about Ikoma Hana of Foal's Folly Village.

Hoshiko followed the sport very casually. It was sacred. It was nonviolent but aggressive and competitive. Fascinating to watch, but she'd never really dug too deep. Still, she asked around while in the market that morning, looking at books.

That evening, Hoshiko found herself in a simultaneously fascinating and irksome conversation with Tamagaki. Interesting for the view someone who could in no way see or feel their interactions with the spirits, despite a career that was one long performance to entice and appease the earth kami.

Irksome because. "Observing the snow on Kuriyama makes it clear that there *is* fortune of blizzards whose record may have been lost."

Jihen spent the morning seeing what all the fuss was about for the sumai tourney. The people were excited about it… and he would ask as to why.

“You know, Miyagino-san, that ronin fellow killed a man in Ryoko Owari over a, shall we say, business dispute,” the Yasuki casually said over drinks. “He'll probably be an important person in Court soon. It’d be smart to get on his good side, know what I mean?”

Ryoichi refilled the sake while the enormous wrestler thought it over. “Good stuff, eh? Kampai!”

7LE Persuade Miyagino to salute Tatsuya with 2 called raises, Skill1/Trait4 +Benten’s +Void Point TN25 | 6k6 ⇒ 30 (TN: 25) succeeds for 2 influence points
I think Benten’s applies since this is persuasion, but if not, 6k5 also hits the TN

A Snack (8MM), Kitchens

“Tamagaki’s an Ikoma, right? I bet she must’ve eaten a lot to bulk up for the sumai tournament,” the Yasuki suggested, as he grabbed a mid-morning snack from the kitchens. “What’s she like? I’m sure you must have stories.”

8MM Sumai event - Persuade cooks to reveal info about Tamagaki, Courtier/Awareness +Benten’s TN20 | 5k5 ⇒ 48 (TN: 20) succeeds

Folks are beginning to turn toward Influencing wrestlers nao, which is to the good, but here's what you should do:

Unless you would like everyone to know what you spent a timeslot to research, you should refrain from naming your skill and trait in the Sakkaku roll (indicate the numbers, of course, but not the names). However, in your private forum, you should include the roll and the names of the skill and trait that you used, so that Fukurokujin and I can keep track.

Day 8 EE-ME
Kenji was starting to get into the hype for this sumai tournament. He was still looking for the right people to talk though and it seemed easier to keep it in the Clan. So he went off to look for Matsu Yasunari, who was probably going to be a stereotypically huge bushi who liked a good game of Go? Or maybe she'd have an interest in exotic fish?

It took a while before he got some good Intel.
