Getting this up later than intended with the event on D9.

From the court presentation:
"Among my studies, I have reason to find the theological teachings around the soul's travels, one life to another, ever learning, hopefully growing, to be some of the most fascinating." She pauses a moment letting the curious wonder where this could possibly be going. "But the court desires entertainment, not a theological lecture, right? Part of those lessons was to look at objects that have been passed down to us in a different light, considering what the person who held it had been like and where they might be when born into this realm again."

"In that spirit, I propose a light picnic before court on <Day 9>. Rather like a moon viewing in that we should have some interesting objects to ponder, write poems about, share our favorite tales of rebirth under this winter sun, rather than saving all such tales for the dark as we blow the candles out one by one." She looks around the court, or seems to, dark eyes finding something in all those faces. "Rather than chill ourselves with contemplation of going into the darkness, I wish to warm ourselves thinking of what it means to emerge back into the light."

The setup will be a light picnic in the LM with seating. People will bring objects that might be interesting, other people will tell stories about them or write poems about them.

For organization: I'd like folks to post here with intent and the object + its brief description (say 2 sentences).

As an example, Hoshiko plans to bring her something many greats-grandfather Isawa Gobo's fan. It remained in her family as they followed Isawa Asahina and she sometimes wonders how his spirit has fared in all these generations.

Setting these up early lets folks see something they may want to respond to, leading to

For organization: #2 Post to 'claim' an object. the story/poem/song should in some way relate to reincarnation. It doesn't even have to do with the person tied to the object here. If the fan reminds you of a favorite folktale where the hero has a fan, go for it. Make rolls or not as you feel like. It's meant to be fluffy fun.

If there's more people looking to tell stories than there are objects...feel free to make up an object brought by one of the NPC delegates.

With the Empress's death, we're aiming to keep things respectful and on the lighter side, vs. tales of people suffering terrible punishments and reincarnation as a snail for their terrible acts in life. A tale of the country bumpkin who is very solicitious of the snail that set up house in their grandfather's favorite sake cup, because they believe that may be grandpa is fine.

Yuna: The object she will bring will be a gold hair comb with an image of a ship's wheel and a gold and red fish. This belonged to her great-grandmother, an earth shugenja Yasuki, who trained with the Kuni before marrying into House Ageki as part of a trade deal.

Shiori: a one-eyed doll that is said belonged to a great-grand uncle of hers. This doll is much like a Daruma doll in look and cultural purpose in the Crab Clan, supposedly originating from the Kuni. The paint has aged to a brick red but it seems otherwise well taken care of.

Shinnosuke: a tenmoku style tea bowl produced in House Tanaka's oldest ceramics workshop, one of several his grandparents liked to use regularly while they were alive.

Hoshiko: Fan: Painted mostly black, so the negative spaces form the image from the underlying warm gold silk. A bare winter cherry tree, with dry grasses at it's base. Plump buds along the gnarled branches hint at the bloom to come. Example of the technique Great-great... grandpa Isawa's fan.

Yuna will participate in this.

Yuna can answer questions about great-grandmother, or feel free to just be inspired and tell an unrelated story about a hair comb, a ship's wheel, a fish, etc.

Shiori will likely participate here! She will bring in a one-eyed doll that is said belonged to a great-grand uncle of hers. This doll is much like a Daruma doll in look and cultural purpose in the Crab Clan, supposedly originating from the Kuni. The paint has aged to a brick red but it seems otherwise well taken care of.

Items so far. If folks want to claim one to speak about, chime in. Also chime in if you want none of them and plan to tell a story about something else (you can do both). Otherwise I'll do a quick random assignment in the morning.

--claimed by Yuna

--claimed by Sayomi

Shintaro will be there: Being the little bundle of exuberant chaos that he is it's anyone's guess if he brings an item or just a clipboard to record everything for science. He's on the list as Schrodinger's artifact. I'll make something up if you choose/are assigned this one and the box is indeed empty.

Eiji brings a single white go stone. It was from the set his great-great-great....grandpa who was a go master played his last game upon. Upon it's conclusion, he divided up the stones among his children who divided it up among their children....

Ryusei will bring... An ink pot, working with sandpiper designs, first owned by the first generation of House Shigi to have fancy stuff like "buildings" and pottery. It was broken at least twice, and has been repaired kintsugi-style- once with gold, once with silver.

Masaki will bring an intricate lacquer box depicting stylised trees in golden and light green tones and red, golden and white poppy flowers. The box smells strongly of spices (the spices have been reserved elsewhere so they wouldn't interfere with the reading!), and has a few dents here and there which are still visible despite repairs over the ages. The box originally belonged to Masaki's great grandfather's grandparents (the stories told in the family vary as to whether the grandfather or grandmother - both seem to have used it), whose dealings greatly contributed to the family's fortunes while they were still part of a larger Yasuki house in the Crane. This part is known and told in the family - what is not known is what these deals involved (the family traditionally interprets the poppy flowers based on their Hanakotoba meanings, 'fun-loving', 'rejoice', 'success', and the dents as simple accidents... that is not quite what they actually represent  )

Yasuki Ryoichi brought a carp netsuke that has been in his family since it was owned by Shiozaki Hana, the founder of his house. It's said to have been a gift to Shiozaki Hana from an artist who was killed by the kolat.

Kitsu Sayomi Sayomi will bring an old hand-held mirror that has been passed down for generations through the women in her family, passing from mother to the eldest daughter. It's made with bronze by Lion artisans.

Agasha Sanjuro Sanjuro will bring the Onodera family sake cup, made from silver mined by his great-great-great-great grandfather and passed down for 6 generations.

Ryusei will bring... hm, don't know how much useless junk he packed for the trip

An ink pot, working with sandpiper designs, first owned by the first generation of House Shigi to have fancy stuff like "buildings" and pottery. It was broken at least twice, and has been repaired kintsugi-style- once with gold, once with silver.

And he will claim Shiori's doll

Edited above to catch up to here.

Posts will go up tonight when I get home, which as folks no doubt notice with my posting schedule, is on the later side.

Like other events, I intend a 'spotlight' thread for people to post up their stories, so they won't have to be constrained by a specific order or break in conversation. A separate thread for other reactions to the items, general chatter, and the sort of theological discussions that work better with the back and forth conversational flow. If someone has a multi paragraph theological treatise to offer, treat that as a story for the spotlight thread.

Updated.

Working to finish up the description posts. If you still want to claim an item for a story before I assign things randomly, or if you do *not* want to be assigned and item. Chime in within the next 30 minutes or so.

If you plan to offer something scholarly or a tale not associated with one of the items, those can just be tossed into the story/speech thread whenever. ^^

Note: I missed Ryusei's doll claim and have swapped it. Which sort of appropriately gives Masaki the carp netsuke. I suspect Masaki slept through the posting and swap, but wanted to mention in case that wasn't the case and they were already composing doll poems.

Sleep through it I did! Carp it is, then :)
Thanks!
