As a recommendation, if you should come online while you are up, it is a good idea to post a placeholder while you get rolls and complete posts in gear. That way I know not to start hard-charging. If I notice you come online during the ghosting process, I will stop immediately and let you do your thing. That gets easier if you do the placeholder post.

Moving this question here as I hadn't seen this thread:

Does the Investigation/Perception check to notice the two hidden assailants when coming within 20 ft of the fight take up an action? If so, would that be a Simple or Complex Action?

It's a free action. You're not actively looking, I assume, because the enemy's right in front of you. That's why the notice emphasis applies.

At the top of the next round, would Doji Arai or someone similarly up in init but far in distance spend a VP to swap init with Jinkan? Then he could start stabbing before the other guys get to stabbing.

Heya, I considered doing this, but Ryoichi doesn't know Jinkan very well and it looks like Jinkan is tied up with Sword Guy #4 anyway, so not sure it would help. Good luck though!

Prone

A prone character is lying flat on his back, side, or stomach, and cannot move, attack, or defend himself to full effect. A prone character immediately suffers a -10 penalty to his Armor TN against melee attacks. This penalty lasts until he stands up. He cannot use Move Actions, and may only adopt the Defense or Attack Stances. He cannot attack with large weapons, and suffers a -2k0 penalty to attacks with medium and small weapons. It requires a Simple Action to stand up from the prone position.

The guy fighting Jinkan is standing, as is Skulking Guy #2. You'd need to make the Investigation (Notice)/Perception check at TN 24 to notice him, though. The other 3 guys are prone. Prone condition defined above.

Tatsuya and Ryunosuke are engaged with 1 remaining sword dude in the shrine.

Melee attacks can be made from 5ft away, right? That seems appropriate for sword welding maniacs, I mean samurai.

Online briefly to read while on lunch. Unlikely to pull IC posts out of my fingers while eating though, so ghosting remains. Does not look like things have shifted into needing reassessment.

Just ducking into a secure room at work, but ghosting instructions hold! Continue running for Tatsuya and son, swap into defence stance (ATN 31) won't be able to reach anyone this round I believe.
