"This will be my first Floating Banquet."

"I can't imagine seeing any of the attendees who have been so appropriately formal here at court suddenly intoxicated. I hope if I mistake how much I can drink, that friends watch over me closely and help guard me from anything foolish. The best guard is probably to say nothing."

"The Little Teacher says: 'You own every word you speak.' If I am not of a mind to speak wisely, I hope I am at least of a mind to not speak at all."

"Is there anything that helps, in such a circumstance?" She asked that very casually, carefully not making eye contact with Otomo-sama who she nonetheless rather did hope had tips as an experienced drinker.

"Our chef suggested making sure your stomach was not empty. Hence this meet-up and the treats he prepared."

[Otomo Mariko]

"Well, ladies," Mariko opines, "a woman can build up her stamina, which is always a help. You do, after all, have to leave them wanting more."

Her cup is empty again.

"But I do remember coming to Court a few years back," she continues. "Only a few, of course, but there was a courtier who thought to have the kami invoked in support of their endeavors--of the earth, the word was. Now, it didn't go so well for them, but that was because the shugenja who was supposed to have helped flubbed the pronunciations."

She shrugs. "I am told that many priestly sorts will enlist the kami to aid them as they put forward their peoples' goals. But I have no such talents, myself."

[Kuni Shiori]

Shiori took a quiet accounting of the spells she possessed and gave a quick bow at that. "Unfortunately, I don't think I have such spells that could aid in that endeavour in the slightest, so I can't say that I'll be using the kami for this event. Besides, that might be against the spirit of the contest? There isn't much in the way of bragging rights, at least when it comes to conventional Crab drinking contests. I can't speak on how things are done in Winter Court."

[Otomo Mariko]

"Oh, a good performance will linger on in legend for years!" Mariko says. "There are occasionally collections made of them, even, if a scribe stays sober enough to take good notes."

She smiles, showing teeth.

"The same is true for a truly bad performance."

She drinks.

Yuna smiled.

"I have no such skill. My life would be very different if I had been born a shugenja. It is a lovely feeling to realize that today - and I think for all the days that remain to me - I would not wish to be anything but the woman I am. A courtier. A person in good position to marry out of the clan. And, for that reason, engaged to the most wonderful man!"

"It is nice to imagine a night of poetry. I do enjoy poetry. I hope we all manage a few good poems before the drink takes us. And our in good company with those who will treat us gently and kindly if we become a little addled."
