[D12, LA, EVENT] The Bowman's Wager, D2: POWER!

Post by Cearnach » Thu Nov 07, 2024 1:05 am

The pitch has been cleaned and restored over the course of the day, but the targets have been replaced with a series of straw figures in real armor. There is a peasant warrior, a ji-samurai, a foreigner in its distinctive all-metal breastplate, and what seemed to be an elite samurai (going by the hat) clad in heavy armor.

All is in readiness for the competitors to take up their positions, and the crowd waits with bated breath for the first arrow to be loosed!
Event Mechanics wrote:This stage will test the might of the competitors. They will fire 5 arrows at stationary targets, but each target is protected by a different form of armor. The competitors will need to punch through that armor’s reduction to have their points count! [No, armor-piercing arrows are not permitted].

Each Target is set at the same distance from the archers, but they are protected by the suits of armor strapped across them. The deciding factor will be which armor you punch through.

The Ashigaru target (tn 18, reduction 1): 1 Archery pt.
The Lightly Armored target (tn 20, reduction 3): 3 Archery pts.
The Gaijin target (tn 23, reduction 4): 4 pts.
The Heavily Armored target (tn 25, reduction 5): 5 pts.

Each increment of 5 on the damage roll after reduction is applied will earn a competitor an additional Archery point.

The top 4 Archery Point Totals will advance to Stage 3. Should two players tie for fourth place, the winner will be determined by the number of Raises called successfully. If that should still result in a tie, the higher Influence rank will proceed.

Somewhat surprised to still be in contention, Ryusei took the pitch with the same feeling he'd had the first time he'd been given nominal command of a vessel.

Let's just try not to screw up too egregiously, shall we?

He lifted his yumi and did his best to focus.

His first shot wouldn't have been fatal... but it would have hurt like hell.

Which was good, because his second skipped off the dummy's helmet.

As did the third. And the fourth. And the fifth.

Ryusei wasn't too bothered by the abysmal showing. It meant the Cup of Defeat would stay well, well, away from him.

Arrow 1-Day 12, Bowman's Wager, Shot 1- Lightly Armored Target, TN 20 | 4k3 ⇒ 20 (TN: 20)

Arrow 1 damage: Day 12, Bowman's Wager, Shot 1 Damage vs Reduction 3 | 5k2 ⇒ 18. So 15 after Reduction.
I believe that's... three archery points for the hit, plus another two for the 15 damage? Or is it another three?

Either way, 5-6 archery points.

Arrow 2- Day 12, Bowman's Wager, Shot 2- Lightly Armored Target, TN 20 | 4k3 ⇒ 17- Miss, zilch.

Arrow 3- Day 12, Bowman's Wager, Shot 3- Lightly Armored Target, TN 20 | 4k3 ⇒ 17 (TN: 20)- Miss, zilch.

Arrow 4- Day 12, Bowman's Wager, Shot 4- Lightly Armored Target, TN 20 | 4k3 ⇒ 15 (TN: 20)- Miss, zilch.

Arrow 5- Day 12, Bowman's Wager, Shot 5- Lightly Armored Target, TN 20 | 4k3 ⇒ 19 (TN: 20) Whiff, zero.

So either five or six total.

Hoping to follow up on her top showing the previous day, Sayomi began by taking her first shot at the most heavily armoured target. The arrow whizzes past, missing its intended target.

The Lioness took a deep breath as she picked out the next arrow, and adjusted her tactics... aiming for the target wearing the gaijin-armour instead! Two successive hits strike through, penetrating through the protective layers and into the strawdoll.

For her next shots, she went for the one armoured as your typical samurai, and continued to deliver devastating arrows to each target.

Hikaru eyes the target and the varying states of armor on the dummies. To be honest, his draw was shorter than many here, not able to fully use the power of the yumi. But his sensei had a saying: "Success does not come from striking hard, nor striking fast, but striking true. So he begins with the heaviest armed. The shots are not deep, but he is an experienced hand for aiming for weak sections and the arrowheads punch through. For four straight shots, they penetrate the thicker armor, but he then realizes his hand is trembling. Hikaru steels himself and aims at a less armored target, narrowly hitting on a flesh wound. He lets out a breath and bows, trying to evaluate how the others are doing.

Kenji was somewhat bemused that he had advanced to the second round of the Bowman's Wager. It was still an honour to take part, even if he knew it would all be over shortly.

His first two shots hit the target but missed the armour completely, like a good Akodo bushi! Those guys were dead now, but he didn't seem to have gotten any poi to.

Oh, they want us to hit the armour.

His next two shots put some decent holes in the light armour. It was enough for him to get a little cocktail with his final shot. He eyed up the big suit of Matsu heavy armour. Drew back. Released!

THUNK!

Straight through into the support! Some poor peasant was going to have a hard time getting that one out.

With a bow to the audience, judges, and his fellow competitors, he left the field to watch the remaining the attempts.

Daichi stepped forward as it came his time to shoot, most of the creatures to the south didn't wear armor often or really at all most days. Most just had skin that might be as tough as Iron. Not that such mattered here as the he took aim.

His first hit, but it didn't penetrate very deep, and his brow creased in frustration.

His second hit and it felt even worse, and a frown made his way onto his lips as he concentrated on the third.

Which sunk into the wood with an audible thunk. Now that was what he was talking about.

The heavily armored target sufficiently killed he moved his gaze towards the lightly armored target. Wounding it deeply on the first shot.

His final shot finished the beast, and with a satisfied nod he left the field.

With a strategy that was much the same as he'd done for the previous day, Ryu lined up and shot arrows into the target in a very workmanlike sort of way.

The first three arrows were good strikes on the most heavily armored target. As he raised his bow to shoot it a fourth time, though, Ryu hesitated, lowering his bow, and taking a deep breath. When he raised his bow again, he directed his last two shots into the moderately armored target.

All hits, but none too deep. Ryu frowned, neither happy nor unhappy with his performance.
