"That's very sweet!" Shinnosuke smiles warmly. "Just like a classical story--Genji and Oborozukiyo, Doji and Kakita. Winter romances can be great fun, but I've seen the virtues of a happy marriage in my own family, too. Perhaps that will be my fate one of these days. Though I admit that, not being of a very jealous temperament myself, I wouldn't mind a spouse who is also not fond of vinegar," he adds, the tips of his ears coloring just a little.

"What all's vinegar got t' do w' any o' that?" Aiko asks.

One can easily imagine the stalk of grass drooping.

"Oh, just a saying where I come from. I never thought it might be regional," Shinnosuke says, smiling apologetically. "People in my part of the northern Crane lands, anyway, say that a person given to jealousy likes drinking vinegar. Because they're always swilling the stuff, they look bitter all the time, and everything else they eat tastes sour even if it's really sweet. It's a sort of folk metaphor, I suppose. Now that I've tried to explain it, I'm not sure of how much sense it really makes," he adds with a wry laugh.

"Oh, we got all kinds o' that kinda thing," Aiko replies. "Don't that just oil y'r noodles?"

Shinnosuke grins, enjoyably perplexed. "Well, if I had any idea what that meant, I might be able to answer the question."

"It's a 'xample o' one o' them 'folk metaphors' you's talkin' 'bout," Aiko replies. "Havin' oil on y'r noodles's a good thing, right? So if that don't just oil y'r noodles, that's makin' things good f'r you. Y' get me?"
