[D8, EA, EVENT] To Fetch a Pail of Water

This event features stages that call for a certain number of successes for the event to succeed. The community can go over, but need not do so.

If you are in court during this timeslot, you must very publicly leave court if you wish to join this thread. You will suffer honor loss for a Minor Breach of Etiquette.

In the heat of the day, an elderly gentleman, dressed in sacramental robes and bearing the mons of the Seppun, emerges from Court bearing a serene expression. Seeming for a moment to be at a loss, he evidently makes up his mind and slowly moves down the hall toward the Genkan. That’s no way for a Seppun to go when court is in session. Something must be up.

And, indeed, as Seppun Tomaru will freely admit to any who ask, the court, in the persons of Otomo Keihime and Otomo Tooru, has tasked him to fetch three pails of water from the well in Ikoma’s Eye to ensure that the Crane clan delegation has enough to make tea for themselves. Just how one elderly man is meant to get three great pails full of water from town and into court on his own must not have figured into the Imperials’ considerations, but surely decency requires that you extend a little help to such a sweet and potentially powerful old man?
Event Mechanics wrote: Step 1: Finding the Implements
The first thing to do is to make sure that Seppun Tomaru can find some buckets without disgracing himself. Sometimes that means using some elbow grease, and sometimes that means taking the disgrace on the chin for your future Emperor.

Make an Investigation (Search)/Perception check at TN 20 to find a pail yourself or a Temptation (Bribery)/Awareness check at TN 15 and subtract 1 bu from your cash reserves to bribe a servant to get one for you.

Three pails are required, and you know that in a busy castle they can’t all be in one place, so we need at least 2 successful rolls to progress.

Step 2: The Way Into Town
The next thing to do is to smooth Seppun Tomaru’s journey through town, where he is initially stopped by Ikoma guards and then mobbed by curious townspeople. Each participant may roll once to bypass the guards and once to mollify the crowd.

In order to steer Tomaru safely past the guards, make an Etiquette (Bureaucracy)/Awareness check at TN 20 to explain your errand in the appropriate terms or a Courtier/Awareness roll at TN 25 to persuade them that a potential Imperial Heir’s sojourn through town isn’t going to cause any problems.
Only 1 successful roll is necessary here.
Benten's Blessing applies.

In order to mollify the crowds of curious onlookers hoping to touch the hand of or maybe get a piece of the clothing of a future Emperor, make either an Intimidation/Willpower check at TN 20 to force the crowd to back off or a Perform: Oratory/Awareness or Sincerity/Awareness roll at TN 25 to persuade them to listen to the better angels of their nature and let the very busy Seppun Tomaru through.
3 successful rolls are required to pass this step.

Voice applies.
Benten's Blesing applies

Step 3: Bucket Brigade.
The last thing to do is to help the old man carry the water back to court without spilling it. Not only is the journey long and the water heavy, but it has an annoying tendency to slosh around. Gosh! Is this what servants go through? No wonder they are always sweaty.

In order to preserve Seppun Tomaru’s dignity, the right thing for you to do is to take the buckets for him before he can pick them up. He will do his utmost to persuade you to let him take one, but you must resist!

Seppun Tomaru rolls a 25 to persuade you to give up your bucket. You must resist with an Etiquette (Courtesy)/Willpower or Lore: Bushido/Intelligence roll. This is a contested roll.

Then, you must lug some water back to court deftly. Make an Athletics/Stamina check at TN 15 or a Perform: Dance/Agility check at TN 20 to successfully tote a pail. A raise will allow you to tote an additional pail. You may not tote more than 2 pails. 3 pails are necessary for victory.

If the team is successful, you win favor with supporters and friends of Seppun Tomaru as the story spreads. Gain .6 glory and 1 favor from Seppun Sadako.

If the team fails, Seppun Tomaru is shamed when he arrives in court with a soiled kimono and one or more spilled pails. He will lose 10 campaign influence and will be excused from court for the remainder of the game.

Yuna immediately excused herself to help.

She had a good memory for where things were. A librarian always cataloged, and understood optimal use of storage.

There! There was a bucket.

She brought it to Seppun Tomaru-sama.

She bowed deeply to him. "As the Little Teacher says: Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water."

https://sakkaku.org/r/16256 27 vs 20 - one success
(reference to memory is for flavor, I rolled inv/perception)
(it sounds like there are 3 buckets needed across two successes. I can edit to 2 buckets if needed, but giving others a chance if multiple people want to try.)

Jihen… seeing the whole matter unfold… including his master’s part in the faux pax… Decided it would be rather unseemly to let the old man have to do these things on his own.

He found a servant outside and kindly passed them a coin to go and fetch a couple of buckets for him so he could assist in the task. Jihen had enough money, the Seppun had always been kind to him and he would repay that kindness to the family as best he could.

Jihen then approached the guards with a soft demeanor and explained the nature of the trip.

“The imperial court has tasked Seppun-sama with an important duty. I will accompany him as he fulfills the will of the court.”

He then spoke to the people, “Seppun Tomaru-sama is a man of great wisdom and dignity. He knows that to serve is the highest honor of both samurai and non-samurai. Please do not disturb him in his duties as he does not disturb us in ours. We all lift where we stand and carry the fortune of all on our shoulders.”

Yuna attempted to get between Seppun-sama and the crowd. But it was hard. The people loved him. They wanted to get close.

She spoke from the heart, asking them to step back. "Please! It's important that he get through. Quickly."

But she was just too genteel, too soft-spoken, too soft in every relevant way.

No one paid a bit of attention.

She frantically looked around. She couldn't calm the crowd. But if she could just make eye contact with a samurai. Surely someone else had come. Help! Fortunes, help!

Daichi was a solider, and carried himself like one and while it wasn't often he had to raise his voice, he did know how to project in the way of a proper Gunso when needs must.

"CLEAR THE WAY." He snapped as the crowd closed in. The intensity of his voice enough to cause many to scurry away.

Looks like one more success needed on Part 2, then on to Part 3.

Appreciate you kicking in, folks!

Any other takers?

Moving at a brisk pace, Ryu caught up to the old Seppun and his new pals. Ryu was scowling darkly, his expression even more grim than usual.

Taking a deep breath, he gathered himself, stepping forward, chin up, to address the crowd. "Please. Everyone. Your excitement is understandable, but Seppun-sama must not be delayed." His voice was mild, and his expression unsmiling, but his words were meant, at least.

It was enough.

If this were the Crab lands, Shiori would know better than to get in the way of an old Crab and their stubbornness to prove their self-efficiency. Not that they weren't capable either, often putting the lazier young ones to shame with how well they could still climb mountains or haul their weight.

She was quite sure the Seppun could still prove his worth but there were some differences in the situation. He was important and the situations were a bit more peculiar, especially over a kerfuffle on spilt tea. Shiori took a pail in each arm and placed her hands together to get a firm lock on her load. Ignore the strain of the weight, she made the trek to court with two pails in tow.

Yuna watched with great relief as others came to help.

Between Jihen, Hiruma-san, and Daidoji-san, the crowd was handled.

And Kuni-san managed to carry two pails!

Could she get last pail? It was a bit outside her skillset. But no harm in trying...

She spoke to Seppun Tomaru-sama of bushido. She had never been so eloquent in her life. Surely Heaven wanted this man to return in courteous condition - at his courtly best. And Heaven gave her the words to convince him!

But could she carry the last bucket? She relied on her knowledge of dance, of balance, of endurance. Her family's ritual dances were all to honor the earth kami. Dances of endurance. She could do this. Steadfast as the earth. And ... she did it!
