Meanwhile Shinnosuke has risen to his feet (still cradling a softly whimpering Haku in one arm) and padded over to one of the sliding screens blocking the view of the courtyard outside. Using his other hand and a bit of effort--the quake having evidently jiggled the wooden screen partly out of its track--he slides it open a crack and looks out.

"Castle's still standing, anyway," he reports back over his shoulder. "That big noise must have been further away."

More dryly, he adds, "Maybe karma acted fast, and a roof somewhere has fallen on our mystery prowlers." But he looks concerned, glancing out again at the samurai and servants swarming in front of the castle.

With the art supplies no longer at risk, Minase returned to paying attention to others around her.

"Where's there's one, there's probably another to come . . . . "

It sounded a bit like a proverb or something possibly uttered by a not-as-smart-as-he-thinks-he-is monk at some point.
