Warriors and students in the dojo today must share the facilities with a unique figure: an old man–ancient, some might say–with all the accouterments of a member of the Brotherhood of Shinsei. Not someone that the Lion are accustomed to having inside their training facilities, certainly. Ordinarily, this would be a matter of some quiet comment, but the monk has an annoying way of making a pest of himself. Always butting in on others’ practice time and trying to start a conversation. Many of the students are ill-disposed to the old monk’s nattering and requests for sparring partners, but the proprieties demand that he be afforded every courtesy until he actually breaks the rules of the dojo or shows disrespect to its kami, something he has yet to do. There are lots of times for heroes, and this might just be one of them.

Approach Bokushi
“Spar” with Bokushi
Answer Bokushi’s Questions
Step 1: The Approach
In order to successfully approach Bokushi and continue with the event, you must figure out a way to get and hold his attention without resorting to rudeness. To do this, make a TN: 20 Etiquette (Courtesy)/Awareness. If you are anyone but a Monk, you must call 1 raise to overcome the social awkwardness of the situation. If you fail at this task, you may still spar with Bokushi in a roleplay sense, but you will not be considered for his task.
Benten's Blessing does not apply to this roll.
Step 2: The Spar
Having got his attention, Bokushi will hear of nothing but an honorable match. He will then do his level best to whup your behind. Problem is, he’s actually pretty good. Launching into an all-out attack with his bo, he puts you on the defensive. Make a Defense/Reflexes check at TN: 20 in order to represent your ability to weather the storm, then a Weaponskill/Agility check or Spellcasting check at TN: 30 to strike a blow. If you fail your Defense check or your attack, you may still answer the questions he poses in a roleplay sense, but you will not be considered for the mission.
Step 3: The Questions
In the middle of your spirited attacks and ripostes, Bokushi will pepper you with questions in the style of wise (not to say tiresome) monks everywhere. Please answer all of the following questions, but choose only one of them to be the one on which you break through with your attack and make its, and only its, associated roll. That will, appropriately, be the last question you answer.
Questions
Is it better to come to an answer quickly or to consider all of the options? [Battle/Willpower TN 25 or Meditation/Void TN 20]
Is the value of a life determined by deeds or by blood? [Lore: Bushido/Intelligence TN 25]
How can you be sure of a person’s character? [Investigation/Perception TN 25]
If the truth would produce discord, is it better to keep it hidden? [Lore: Theology (Shintao)/Intelligence TN 25]
At the end of the day, Bokushi will carefully review your answers. The 4 highest scoring (in terms of successes and raises across all 3 stages) people who do not come across as unwise choices for a wise old man to entrust with an incredibly important mission will be chosen.
