[Day 3, MM-LE, EVENT] Hidden Emperor

Post by Cearnach » Sat Apr 13, 2024 11:52 pm

This event takes place in each timeslot from Mid-Morning to Late Evening. Note this well: only the top 4 highest-scoring people will “win” this event. They will be put forward for a very important mission that will take them away from court over the D4-D6 period. This mission will involve investigation, negotiation, and combat. Please join if you know that you will be available for an action-packed (and time-sensitive) series of Events, but do so knowing that these disruptions, along with the possible death of your character, will occur.

Warriors and students in the dojo today must share the facilities with a unique figure: an old man–ancient, some might say–with all the accouterments of a member of the Brotherhood of Shinsei. Not someone that the Lion are accustomed to having inside their training facilities, certainly. Ordinarily, this would be a matter of some quiet comment, but the monk has an annoying way of making a pest of himself. Always butting in on others’ practice time and trying to start a conversation. Many of the students are ill-disposed to the old monk’s nattering and requests for sparring partners, but the proprieties demand that he be afforded every courtesy until he actually breaks the rules of the dojo or shows disrespect to its kami, something he has yet to do. There are lots of times for heroes, and this might just be one of them.
Event Mechanics wrote:Should you choose to join this event, you will need to do the following things:
Approach Bokushi
“Spar” with Bokushi
Answer Bokushi’s Questions

Step 1: The Approach
In order to successfully approach Bokushi and continue with the event, you must figure out a way to get and hold his attention without resorting to rudeness. To do this, make a TN: 20 Etiquette (Courtesy)/Awareness. If you are anyone but a Monk, you must call 1 raise to overcome the social awkwardness of the situation. If you fail at this task, you may still spar with Bokushi in a roleplay sense, but you will not be considered for his task.

Benten's Blessing does not apply to this roll.

Step 2: The Spar
Having got his attention, Bokushi will hear of nothing but an honorable match. He will then do his level best to whup your behind. Problem is, he’s actually pretty good. Launching into an all-out attack with his bo, he puts you on the defensive. Make a Defense/Reflexes check at TN: 20 in order to represent your ability to weather the storm, then a Weaponskill/Agility check or Spellcasting check at TN: 30 to strike a blow. If you fail your Defense check or your attack, you may still answer the questions he poses in a roleplay sense, but you will not be considered for the mission.

Step 3: The Questions
In the middle of your spirited attacks and ripostes, Bokushi will pepper you with questions in the style of wise (not to say tiresome) monks everywhere. Please answer all of the following questions, but choose only one of them to be the one on which you break through with your attack and make its, and only its, associated roll. That will, appropriately, be the last question you answer.

Questions
Is it better to come to an answer quickly or to consider all of the options? [Battle/Willpower TN 25 or Meditation/Void TN 20]
Is the value of a life determined by deeds or by blood? [Lore: Bushido/Intelligence TN 25]
How can you be sure of a person’s character? [Investigation/Perception TN 25]
If the truth would produce discord, is it better to keep it hidden? [Lore: Theology (Shintao)/Intelligence TN 25]

At the end of the day, Bokushi will carefully review your answers. The 4 highest scoring (in terms of successes and raises across all 3 stages) people who do not come across as unwise choices for a wise old man to entrust with an incredibly important mission will be chosen.

Sae watches the chaos caused by 'Bokushi' for several long minutes as he strains but never quite breaks the bounds of etiquette. Eventually though he starts pestering some less confident students and the Daidoji frowns. Well, time to get his attention.

She begins another kata intentionally sloppy this time, and sure enough the old man appears behind her shoulder to chide her lack of focus.

"Perhaps, monk-sama, I could draw upon your wisdom and beg a spar with you? That I might improve my technique to your standards?"
He is pretty good (hell of a defence there chief) but it's one hard place vs another and Sae has stamina on her side.

She certainly wasn't expecting a philosophy debate, and hides a slight smile recognising a similar technique from the Ruby Dojo.

"Is the value of a life determined by deeds or by blood?"
"Deeds shed blood, or save it, but I worry at the man who uses either to value a human life above another."

"How can you be sure of a person’s character?"
"You can never be sure, it is how you live with an accept that doubt that defines you. You must choose to trust."

"If the truth would produce discord, is it better to keep it hidden?"
"Oh, so nice to meet someone else who has read Lies. Our world must either be built on truth, or built on lies. Only one of those two can withstand the weight of scrutiny."

"Is it better to come to an answer quickly or to consider all of the options?"
"When someone strikes, you parry." Sae lunges forward, deflecting one of Bokushi's strikes and drives her bokken into his side, ending the match.
"Consideration is a luxury."

Stepping back and bows low.
"Thank you for the lesson."

Somewhere in the world (not Rokugan, right?) there were sheep. Ewes, when attempting to attract attention, did not do so actively. No instead they stood there in hopes of gaining attention.

That was what Masumi did. She stood there very still, waiting and waiting and waiting and, well, waiting. The best she could do was slightly alter her location or even one time she tried to broaden her stance a little to show that she was indeed a very big Matsu, very strong.

It didn't work.

When she got tired of waiting, she simply scampered off to do something else with her time!

"May I?" Sayomi asked after having observed various hopefuls try themselves against the monk. "Unless, you do not wish to fight against a samurai, that is? You seem very capable, after all."

Was the Darling of Kyuden Ikoma being sassy? To a monk?! Perish the thought!

She quickly realised the monk wouldn't go easy on her, but her training with the Akodo allowed her to keep her calm against his barrage of attacks. Even with a bokken in hand, a student of Akodo was like the eye in the center of the storm, biding its time for when it was time to unleash.

"If the truth would produce discord, is it better to keep it hidden?," Bokushi asked as they exchanged strikes and parries, but Sayomi kept her focus as she replied; "It depends, but who does the truth serve? Can the discord be for the greater good, or will it plunge innocent lives into chaos? If it does, then I don't think I could support such a truth."

The monk didn't relent, and followed up; "Is it better to come to an answer quickly or to consider all of the options?" Sayomi sidestepped his attack, and parried an incoming kick, giving her a few seconds to think before responding. "When possible, consider the options - but learn to weigh them quickly, so you may always be able to act swiftly."

"How can you be sure of a person’s character?" he asked, and she quickly parried his strike and question. "Believe who a person says they are based on their actions."

That answer spurred on one more question: "Is the value of a life determined by deeds or by blood?" In response to this, Sayomi knocked the monk off-balance and held the bokken against his throat in a victorious posture. "Deeds. We strive every day to live up to our legacies, from the greatest warrior to the most hard-working heimin, and it is our deeds that determine that."

Ryusei tried, he really did. He was very curious about the Brotherhood of Shinsei, and figured a mad monk with a stick might be an interesting person to get to know.

But it just wasn't to be. He couldn't figure it out.

(Mid evening timeslot)
Honoka had heard of commotion a monk was causing and so later in the day she went to see what was happening in the dojo. What she was presented with was a monk disrupting students and guests equally, but stopping short of actually doing something wrong. One thing she knew though was if a monk was trying to be disruptive, there was usually a good cause - all the stories of monks had examples of this.

Taking advantage of the chaos, Honoka was able to naturally work her way into the situation and found herself earning the right to spar with the man! Not part of the plan, but the young Ikoma was nothing if not adaptable. And, as her skills proved, talented in both defensive and offensive means, as she was able to parry and dodge the equally very talented man before performing plenty of well placed strikes of her own. So focused in the battle that she answered the questions fired at her without even giving them a second thought.

"By deed, blood may elevate someone but what one does defines the legacy they leave behind" she dodged another strike.

"By how they act" Honoka said as she pushed the offensive. Which gave her a small amount of time to deal with the next question.

She went for a strike, her attack blocked leaving her face to face with the man. Despite the spar, she had a grin on her face.

"When do we ever get the chance to consider the options? Better to answer fast and plan ahead than dally and be unprepared."

As they finally broke up, she gave the man a bow. Which was when she finally considered her replies, but she still believed in what she said.

"Thank you for the spar. And the test, I think."

Re: [Day 3, MM-LE, EVENT] Hidden Emperor

Post by Akodo Kenji » Mon Jan 13, 2025 4:11 am

After a rather trying start to the day where he had spilled a small pot of his favourite black ink, also there had been that earthquake, Kenji was determined to put it behind him with a solid workout. He had not spent enough time in the dojo this week so he was looking forward to it. It was surprising to see the old monk, and more surprising to see the old man so rudely interrupting everyone.

There were of course many stories about annoying old Monks. Sometimes they turned out to be sent by the Heavens. Other times they just needed a good old fashioned Lion Clan beat down...

Approaching the monk was easy enough for someone trained in courtly ways. Ignore the impoliteness, provide a polite non-committal response to the bawdy joke. It turned out his name was Bokushi and he wanted to spar!

Well that was all Kenji needed to hear. Slipping into a ready stance he expertly avoided the flurry of staff strikes. It was like Grandma always said: "If some fool comes at you with a stick, don't let him hit you then chop off his head."

As for the head chopping? Well he could have done that but it would have been a bit unseemly. There was a twinkle in the Monk's eye as he threw out one his odd little questions:
Bokushi wrote:"Is the value of a life determined by deeds or by blood?"
The Monk struck hard but Kenji countered with an equally hard tap tap, deflecting the staff and striking the monk with great restraint right over the heart. "Blood is the currency of a single lifetime; one's deeds may last forever."

It seemed he had won this bout. "Thank you for the match." A sincere bow of gratitude was offered before he returned to his training.

Post by Yasuki Ryoichi » Mon Jan 13, 2025 5:08 am

It took some effort to maneuver the old man into a private moment, but finally Ryoichi confronted the ancient monk.

“I’ve been watching you, grandfather,” the Yasuki said softly. “I know what you are. You needn’t deny it.”

The monk’s bushy white eyebrows rose. “Oh…?”

“Omens and portents have been seen,” Ryoichi whispered. “You’ve arrived at a time that the Empire is in great need. You berate the students here, test them, pose riddles to them. And you handle weapons better than any monk I’ve ever seen.”

“And…?” Bokushi said in a dangerous tone.

“It’s so obvious!” Ryoichi said triumphantly. “You’re a kenku swordsman in disguise, looking for heroes!”

There was a long pause as the monk (kenku?) considered how to address this accusation. Ryoichi had to admire how the monk (kenku?) kept his face perfectly still, not revealing even a hint of his thoughts upon being discovered.

Finally, Bokushi said, “Then you know what must come next.” The monk (kenku?) tossed a bokken to the Crab, who deftly caught it and fell into a classical guard position. Bokushi’s attack was blazingly fast, but the Hida had taught Ryoichi well - a sidestep and a sweep of his bokken turned his opponent's attack aside. Instantly, Ryoichi counterattacked, rapping Bokushi on the wrist with the blunted edge of his wooden sword.

The monk (kenku?) smiled as he accepted the blow, and barked out his cryptic riddles:

Kenku?: “Is the value of a life determined by deeds or by blood?”
Ryoichi: “A man’s actions determine his worth. But no man can escape the karma given to him by the kami.”

Kenku?: “How can you be sure of a person’s character?”
Ryoichi: “Only by seeing how they act when tested by great adversity.”

Kenku?: “If the truth would produce discord, is it better to keep it hidden?”
Ryoichi: “No. Better to swallow the bitter truth than a pleasant lie.”

Kenku?: “Is it better to come to an answer quickly or to consider all of the options?”

“You saw how I came to approach you,” Ryoichi said, lowering his bokken. “I think you know my answer to this riddle.”

The monk (kenku?) stroked his beard thoughtfully. “Yes, young Yasuki-san,” he said gravely. “I think I understand.”

During her morning training Arai meets with the monk. They seem to be able to understand each other perfectly well and soon they begin to spar. The Doji isn't used to being on the defense, though. When the old monk launches his attack with his bo, the Crane is an easy target. They continue sparring and talking before the duelist takes her leave. A nice monk, a nice spar and that's pretty much it.

Daichi didn't know that many monks, at least not that many that hadn't been Crab once. Or had been around Crab a bunch. So, in general he didn't do too well when addressing them. "Hey, Old Guy." He called trying to get the man's attention.

Unfortunately, he was completely ignored.

Hearing that there was a… unique monk… lingering about the dojo in the evening drew Jihen to see what the rumor mill had been so preoccupied with despite the calamitous morning events.

Jihen saw the old man pummel a number of people who came to speak with him… and when an opening occurred he stepped forward to take a turn.

“Master… Bokushi, I presume? I hope you will not begrudge me listening to the advice of the Little Teacher. I have come to learn from one who appears to know what I do not.”

As the old man then prepared for a physical attack, Jihen merely moved to sit in a meditative posture.

“I’ve been hit before during lessons… You may proceed with your teaching.” Jihen replies before Bokushi lands a powerful wallop on him with his staff.

When asked why he would not engage Jihen replied, “My path has never been the one of physical violence. I serve the empire and the Way with my other talents. One does not ask a fish to fly, nor a hawk to breathe water… Yet they each serve the Way as they are able.”

After taking his strike, the old man then asked his question to the younger monk.

Jihen replied, “The answer is neither quick nor slow. It is the moment itself that holds the answer. When the mind is still, there is no need to choose. All options are already part of the same path. The question is not about speed or consideration, but about seeing clearly in each moment. ‘A clear mind can topple even the strongest will’.”

He would bow in deference to the master when their conversation was complete.

“I thank you for your instruction. I will think upon it again…”
