[Day 3, MM, EVENT] Kyufoki-kami's Displeasure, Part III: A Solemn Rite
Posted: Sun Apr 14, 2024 12:42 am
Kyufoki must be assuaged, lest his wrath be felt in a cascade of aftershocks! Fortunately, some of the greatest priests of the Empire are gathered at this very spot. As one of them, surely you can suss out the bee in the Fortune’s bonnet and release it, appeasing him on behalf of a grateful Empire!
This stage consists of three sections. These sections must be completed in order. If a roll is failed, your contribution is at an end. However, you may give the number of your total Ritual Points as a static bonus to another character’s roll if you wish.
Section 1) The Question
The journey to a solution begins with identifying the problem. In the case of an earthquake, that can be challenging. After all, the kami has made his displeasure known with great force, but discovering what precisely has upset him is a different problem.
Choose a method of divining the source of Kyufoki’s displeasure. You will make a roll. A success on that roll will earn you 1 Ritual Point. Each called Raise will earn you an additional Ritual Point.
Commune: You may beseech the kami for their insight. Cast the commune spell with a kami of your choice. Of course, it’s more challenging to get through to them when they’re all stirred up like this:
Earth kami: tn 20
Fire kami: tn 20
Water kami: tn 25
Air kami: tn 30
Ishi may cast Commune with the Void if they call one raise for clarity (raising the TN to 25). That raise will not give you a ritual point. It is merely necessary to plumb the mysteries of the Void. If you do not know Commune with the Void, you will need to Commune with one of the other forms of kami.
Lore: Find yourself with a thorny problem? Why not read a book? Choose one of the following Lore skills and roll it:
Lore: History/Intelligence: tn 30
Lore: Omens/Perception: tn 25
Lore: Nature/Willpower: tn 30. Earthquakes. Are. Natural. Phenomena. If you have the Disbeliever disadvantage, you must attempt this roll, eschewing all others.
Lore: Theology (Fortunes) /Intelligence: tn 25
Meditation: Sometimes the answer lies within. Like, really deep within. So deep, you’ve got to sweat it out. Make a Meditation/Stamina roll, tn 25.
The following Advantages and Disadvantages apply to this Stage: Fukurokujin's Blessing: History, Fukurokujin's Curse
Section 2) Centering
Before tangling with forces of terrible might, it is wise to gather your resources.
Perform either a Meditation/Void or Tea Ceremony/Void roll. TN: 20. Gather your strength. You’ll need it.
If you completed Section 1 using a Lore: Nature/Willpower roll, you also have some preparations to do. After all, advising the Ikoma on earthquake safety is a delicate task! Make an Etiquette/Perception roll, tn: 30.
The following Advantages and Disadvantages apply to this Stage: None
Section 3) Chthonic Power
You have researched, you have prepared. Now it is time to act. The ritual to appease Kyufoki will require you to make either a spellcasting roll using your Earth ring (TN 25) or a Perform: Dance/Awareness roll (TN 30).
If you completed Section 1 using a Lore: Nature/Willpower roll, it’s time to make your case to the Ikoma. You rehearsed your presentation. You know that you’re not going to come off like an arrogant know-it-all. But now it’s time to deliver. And you know that delivery has got to sparkle, or all this work was for naught. Choose one of the following rolls:
Courtier/Awareness, tn 30
Engineering/Awareness, tn 30
Perform: Oratory/Awareness, tn 25
The following Advantages and Disadvantages apply to this Stage: Benten's Blessing (Lore: Nature characters), Voice (Perform: Oratory), Fukurokujin's Curse,
Results
Success: If you generated Ritual Points, you have contributed to assuaging the wrath of Kyufoki! Or perhaps you have helped the Ikoma get along in an unstable area. Add your Ritual Points to the community total.
Failure: If you reached Stage 3 and failed, you have only stoked the fires of the Kami’s anger. Subtract any Raises you called from the community total.
If the Community fails to amass 12 Ritual Points, then Kyufoki is even more pissed off than before! Anyone who made it to Stage 3 of the ritual receives the Wrath of the Kami: Earth disadvantage. Also, a friendly warning: keep your eye on the Weather.
If the Community amasses between 12 and 20 Ritual Points, then Kyufoki remains angry! The aftershocks will continue.
If the Community successfully amasses between 21 and 30 Ritual Points, then Kyufoki’s wrath dissipates! Those who contributed successes to the pool receive 4 glory and an experience point for their trouble!
If the Community successfully amasses 31 or more Ritual Points, then Kyufoki is heartily pleased with the works of Ningen! Those who contributed successes to the pool receive 4 glory and an experience point, as well as the Strength of the Earth advantage.
