It had been a few days now since the last night of drinking. Not a lot, really, but enough that she didn't feel disinclined to participate more actively today.

That was true for only two cups, though. Two poems later - poems she remembered from her lands' traditional songs, rather than creations of her own, but appropriate enough - the third cup hit her like a wall, making the taste of the... how many bottles was it again she had downed with Sae? Well, their taste returned with a vengeance.

Not the most proper display in the record books, nor the most memorable. For good and bad.

Hikaru is thrilled at the idea. Poetry? That was as much of an expression of himself as the blade. He has an idea. He isn't going to perform as many haiku as he can. No...he's going to before an expansion of one. His voice rings out to the court

waking at night;
the lamp is low,
the oil freezing

it has rained enough
the stubble on the field
black

winter rain
falling on the cow-shed;
a cock crows.

the leeks
newly washed white-
how cold it is!

the sea darkens;
voices of wild ducks
are faintly white.

ill on a journey;
my dreams wander
over a withered moor.

Jihen sat with a warm expression upon his face as he partook of the meal and listened to the other members of the winter court provide their recitations and compositions. He himself had been reflecting upon the imagery of the chrysanthemum since the night before and began composing some poems pulling from ones he knew to fit his feelings on this night.

When there was a lull and it was apparent he would not be disturbing one of higher station than him he stood to share his poems.

"kyō hikite
kumoi ni utsusu
kiku no hana
ama tsu hoshi to ya
asu kara wa min

Today I reflect upon the chrysanthemums
taking shape in the clouds.
And I wonder...
If I will see them as stars tomorrow.

This first poem sought to link the Imperial families to the heavens themselves... Suggesting ever so politely that it was this bond that was beautiful and should be valued.

hitokusa ni
sakeba kainashi
momoshiki ni
utsurite nochi wa
iro kau na kimi

When one flower blooms alone,
the lord's manner is not as vivid
as when a vast array of blooms
brighten all who see it!

This second poem hinted at the importance of an imperial with numerous descendants and friends... not one who seeks to bring attention only to themselves.

utsurou to
miyuru mono kara
kiku no hana
sakerishi eda zo
kawarazarikeru

Though this flower
to us looks faded,
The chrysanthemum which grafted
still blooms and continues on, unchanging!

The third poem hints at the relative unimportant factor of age and/or the previous station in determining the stability of the imperial family. The quality of the person would determine whether the line blooms and continues in prosperity.

moto yori no
iro ni wa aredo
kiku no hana
katae wa utsusu
tokorogara kamo

Though the Chrysanthemum,
is beautiful in its youthful appearance.
That is only one aspect
of its true character and beauty."

The final poem would hint at the difference between outward fame or notoriety and the true beauty of an honorable soul who gives all of themselves to others.

It was at that point that the alcohol started to take its toll on the monk who normally dealt with sake in moderation. His mind wandered to an image from the previous night and a poem he had composed for a different chrysanthemum flower in a moment of worldly desire...

His glance shifted slightly to lie upon the Lady Seppun for the briefest moment... He then turned his eyes back to the crowd as a whole and opened his mouth to cite what his heart had spoken to him... but suddenly stopped himself.

"Excuse you... I mean me... It appears I am all out of poemsh for too-night."

Hoshiko would prefer not drinking this much...but tradition!

The first is sipped slowly, listening to other poets. But eventually it finishes and she finds inspiration in recent events.

As I sat with tea
A bird alighted to share
Warming the winter

My thoughts scattering
Like one hundred gourds attached
To a single stem

Before joining a different round evoking the sort of winter weather one might expect of court in colder parts of the Empire.

Seppun Sadako...partakes. She can hardly not. But she is slow to drink her single cup of sake, and when she speaks her piece, it is clear that her studies, while thorough, are not so focused on that end as others'.

Heichi Batsuda rose and turned toward where a certain Imperial was sitting just a bit up the stream. Fixing him with his eyes, he downed his cup like it was nothing and rattled off his first poem.

The fox in winter
Seeks the warmth of hidden dens
Man is no diff'rent.

Tooru, for his part, huffs and folds his arms.
