D8 ME - Art Festival: The Commentary (Open to all)

Post by Yasuki Masaki » Tue Jan 21, 2025 2:46 pm

A larger number of lanterns than usual have been spread across the Forecourt's open air courtyard tonight, alongside the paths that cross it and the edges of the koi pond - and of course, in even higher number, at the more open areas where many of the tables, easels and other implements available were arranged so as to prepare specific areas for exhibits representing each of the Great Clans - each one done by the members of another Great Clan, as per the festival's theme. Spots are also reserved for representations of Minor Clans. Monks present at the Winter Court and the Imperial families will find a central area with space for any pieces of their own, should they also decide to display their own contributions to tonight's celebration of "Strength in Unity and Diversity".

The central part of the courtyard, with the areas reserved for the displays, is clearly the heart of the festival. A keen observer might note that the spaces reserved for the exhibits representing the Great Clans are arranged so that the order more or less resembles their positions in Rokugan - with the Court to the east, where the sun would rise each day. For one walking in from the court chamber, therefore, the artwork representing the Crab Clan would therefore be to the left, while that of the Phoenix and Dragon would be to the right. The space reserved for the Crane lies to the left as well, not that far from the Crab - perhaps an unconscious effect of the Yasuki's experience of the Crane as being "just around the corner". The area for monks and imperials is roughly at the centre, more or less close to the Court - where one would expect to find Otosan Uchi, although since the distances are far from following perfect scale, one could also easily argue that this central area would be Kyuden Ikoma instead.

Although the central part is clearly the focus of the night, a few tables and sitting areas were left alongside the paths and close to the pond, so that those who might want a place for a (slightly) more reserved conversation, or just a spot to sit down and relax, might find one.

Servants will be found walking through the area offering tea, sake, rice balls, sweets and other similar refreshments. A few tables with such refreshments are also placed at strategic points among the exhibits (Lion and Crane rice plantations? Crab sake and tea? Who knows...) so one doesn't necessarily have to wait for a servant if they want something. That such tables also tend to lead to conversations may or may not have contributed to their being included.

Masaki is dressed in the kimono she wore to court the previous day, a gradient from dark slate gray to almost white with a white, black and blue koi pattern in the front and two large black and white carps interlaced in a yin-yang symbol over a sunset red circle. After having clearly spent some time seeing to the arrangements, she seems to be rather busy doing final adjustments and talking to her clansmates at the exhibit representing the Phoenix clan.

That notwithstanding, as the one who proposed the event, she will make sure to set aside some time to greet and welcome everyone who arrives for the festival with a warm smile.

Soshi Eiji arrived at the festival. He was never a particularly flashy dresser. While some might argue dressing in the height of fashion, might draw others in, Eiji always believed in the strength of his speaking skills. If he couldn't win you with his words, a jaunty little hat wasn't going to fix that. Honestly, the mask he had been given was more ornamentation that he cared for, but his new family thought it a grand reminder that everytime he spoke, it was for the Scorpion, not the Lion.

He couldn't help but stop and feel particularly honored by the Dragon's display for the Scorpion. He had not offered his advice in an attempt to seek credit, and it was entirely in Yuna's nature to give it. It worked quite well for the festival's theme. Sometimes advice given merely as a friend was more beneficial than you expected.

Ryusei browsed the show with no small amount of pleasure.

He thought his own contribution by far the weakest part of it, but that mostly meant he'd established a suitable floor.

At the conclusion of the Crab's presentation, Shiori would make her way to where the gathering was found to do some mingling. This was also where the food and refreshments were found. It would have been awful to not have her share of the offerings here, maybe encourage some of the guests to partake. For the occasion, she was dressed in a deep red furisode kimono with motifs of mountains on the fabric and black hakama.

She kept a casual ear about to catch some of the commentary some may have on the art pieces.

Yuna was at her station by her calligraphy, but easily talked to there.

She had changed out of her kimono from earlier (and not just because she danced a heavy bucket of water from town to court.) Prayers said over the fallen kimono, she deliberately selected a green kimono that had blossoms of red and black on it. Since she was representing the Scorpion!

Daichi was lingering around the area, more to see the full show Masaki and Shiori had put together then anything. The women had worked hard on this while he mainly had just idled away the time.

He had a cup of sake in hand as he wandered around the proceedings looking at the various pieces of art on display.

Eiji bowed at the arrival of the insightful Asahina.

"Ah, Asahina, good evening. Yes, I think Agasha-san did quite the amazing job. I must admit I did not expect her to so throughly transform her work based on my suggestions. It was quite good before, truly I had to struggle to find critique with it. But an artist only grows if they hear critique in addition to praise." he said.

He nodded.

"I have been enjoying the festival thus far. I am in between performances, as it were, would you care to walk the festival with me? I'd love to hear your insightful commentary on the various works." he asked.

Eiji nods.

"Yasuki-san has certain outdone herself, and that's alreday a high bar to clear." he says. "I understand that she'll be putting on a performance later in the festival, so we should make sure to catch that."

With the crowds and the occassional need to return to his area to telling the story again, the path on which he would lead the Asahina was quite roundabout. There was an order to the viewings, but one that was not clear to any samurai of the Empire.

And so they came to the Asahina's display. No, not this Asahina, the other one.

Eiji studied the painted umbrella display representing the Dragon.

"Hm, the umbrellas' shape certainly lends themselves well to representing mountains. Excellent brushwork as well." he offered regarding Minase's display.

"It's played the Thunder Dragon once or twice," Shin says, punctuating with a modest flick of his open fan, "but of course it really can't compare to some of fine old masks the Golden Spring troupe has of that type. I suppose you could call it a prototype; I'd like to do a better one, one of these days, but I'm not ashamed of it, at least."

Otomo Tooru's tour of the performances ends at Lord Heichi's landscape. Impressive, but there's something oddly familiar...

No! How did he? No way!

A small blush colored Tooru's cheeks as he glanced about. But his eyes met the gaze of Lord Heichi, and he knew that he had to beat a hasty retreat.
