D9 LM: Past Lives Picnic--chatter

Post by Asahina Hoshiko » Fri Jan 24, 2025 4:12 am

(This thread is for the mingling and conversation. Respond to stories and artifacts as you like. Stories are here)

Around a central area with cushions for seating, a number of small tables are available for people to display their interesting objects. People are encouraged to touch and examine the objects, react and discuss around them.

The decor evokes Meido, but aims to avoid doing so in a gloomy or spooky way. This is not a night of 100 candles with dim lights and a shrouded mirror.

There are mirrors though, evoking the karma mirrors of the underworld, in which one may see their past actions drawn forth for the judges. Some mounted on trees in the garden, others dangling, all adding flashes of light and movement in the light wind of the day. They counter the overcast skies with their unexpected flashes. The flashing glimpses of reflections might also remind one of a missing relative as they see just a moment of their own reflection, bent through memory to someone with a passing resemblance.

Emma-O's symbols are about. Origami representations of his fearsome black mempo, court implements as reminders of the judgement that waits there, and cleverly folded mazoku--the spirits who serve Emma-O endlessly

Scattered braziers offer warmth to gather around for those who don't find the mild winter weather all that mild. Servants have tea and light snacks on hand, and may be asked for more substantial fare for those who wish for a proper lunch before court.

The Objects and who will talk about them
*************************************************
For Shintaro (should he tell a tale)
A war-fan, very faded. The black lacquer is hazed and cracked, while the gold symbols are of a progenitor house long faded beneath a pale Phoenix mon. The silk cord at the end of the handle is obviously newer.

For Sanjuro
A gold hair comb with an image of a ship's wheel and a gold and red fish. This belonged to her great-grandmother, an earth shugenja Yasuki, who trained with the Kuni before marrying into House Ageki as part of a trade deal.

For Ryusei
A one-eyed doll that is said belonged to a great-grand uncle of hers. This doll is much like a Daruma doll in look and cultural purpose in the Crab Clan, supposedly originating from the Kuni. The paint has aged to a brick red but it seems otherwise well taken care of.

For Yuna
A tenmoku style tea bowl produced in House Tanaka's oldest ceramics workshop, one of several his grandparents liked to use regularly while they were alive.

For Sayomi
A fan, painted mostly black, so the negative spaces form the image from the underlying warm gold silk. A bare winter cherry tree, with dry grasses at it's base. Plump buds along the gnarled branches hint at the bloom to come. Example of the technique Great-great... grandpa Isawa's fan.

For Hoshiko
A single white go stone. It was from the set his great-great-great....grandpa who was a go master played his last game upon. Upon it's conclusion, he divided up the stones among his children who divided it up among their children....

For Eiji
An ink pot, working with sandpiper designs, first owned by the first generation of House Shigi to have fancy stuff like "buildings" and pottery. It was broken at least twice, and has been repaired kintsugi-style- once with gold, once with silver.

For Ryoichi
An intricate lacquer box depicting stylised trees in golden and light green tones and red, golden and white poppy flowers. The box smells strongly of spices (the spices have been reserved elsewhere so they wouldn't interfere with the reading!), and has a few dents here and there which are still visible despite repairs over the ages. The box originally belonged to Masaki's great grandfather's grandparents (the stories told in the family vary as to whether the grandfather or grandmother - both seem to have used it), whose dealings greatly contributed to the family's fortunes while they were still part of a larger Yasuki house in the Crane. This part is known and told in the family - what is not known is what these deals involved (the family traditionally interprets the poppy flowers based on their Hanakotoba meanings, 'fun-loving', 'rejoice', 'success', and the dents as simple accidents... that is not quite what they actually represent  )

For Masaki
A carp netsuke that has been in his family since it was owned by Shiozaki Hana, the founder of his house. It's said to have been a gift to Shiozaki Hana from an artist who was killed by the kolat.

For Shinnosuke
An old hand-held mirror that has been passed down for generations through the women in her family, passing from mother to the eldest daughter. It's made with bronze by Lion artisans.

For Shiori
The Onodera family sake cup, made from silver mined by his great-great-great-great grandfather and passed down for 6 generations.

As the organizer, Hoshiko circulates with one eye on the flow of people and refreshments...as well as an awareness of those handling her fan.

That nice Lion girl seems rather interested, don't you think? Kitsu, wasn't she? She might even have her ancestors telling her about past lives!

A muttered, "oh? so you've been holding back on telling me about mine?" is all the response she offers before picking up a cup of tea and examining the cunning little comb.

Agasha Yuna mingled at the picnic when it wasn't her turn to speak.

She was wearing a beautiful green kimono, a dyed silk in a lighter green at the shoulders fading to a darker green at the hem. The embroidered decoration was a bundled set of floral ribbons, draped across the kimono, gold, with red, purple, and white flowers.

She bowed to Asahina-san. "Thank you for organizing this lovely event. The decorations and topic encourage thoughtful reflection. A fascinating topic. Did you say you'd made a particular study of it?"

Shiori would join the picnic chatter area, especially when there were some refreshments at the event. She had skipped her morning breakfast, so was ever thankful that it seemed others had the foresight to have such inclusions in their events so that busybodies could compact their day.

Composing poetry is thirsty work! Sometimes hungry, too. Before and after leaving his poem on Sayomi's mirror, Shinnosuke circulates, nursing a cup of tea and pausing here and there to admire Hoshiko's decorations and the other ancestral objects.

Oh, she had that lovely romantic story. Gobo would have been that first fellow, you know. Not much imagination. Who would think of catching stars in pottery?

Hoshiko nods, possibly as much to that hidden voice as to the Dragon. "As much as I can, at least, though our records are rather shallow on the topic. I hope to have a chance to research more here. Even if the Ikoma are in charge of the libraries, the Kitsu must contribute, I should think!"

"The story was lovely. Did you feel a particular connection to the cup? Or any of the items?"

She smiled at the compliment to the story.

"I have certainly been enjoying my visits to the Ikoma library. A remarkable collection. And I say that as a librarian myself, from the joint Dragon-Phoenix library in Agasha lands."

"I did feel a connection to the tea bowl. To artisanship. To love stories."

She glanced over at Shiba Ryusei.

"I can relate to the desire to make a bowl of such beauty that it can somehow contain love itself."

Hoshiko follows the glance with the hint of a smile. "Indeed, or to fight off the forgetfulness of the soul when passing from realm to realm enough to fulfill a promise made in another life."

All this time and no hints. Well, he didn't leave undone promises, maybe he should have.

There is a momentary glance to the side, before Hoshiko's focus returns to the audible conversation. "I've finally had a chance to visit the library today, It's rather immense compared to that of the Asahina. Of course they've had a lot longer to gather it." How many texts had her ancestors left behind when they left the Isawa? She hadn't really considered it before.

"So the Phoenix have been busy already developing shared libraries? How long has that one been developing?" It did bode well for the success of their hoped for Imperial library to already have administrators with some experience at sharing duties and collections.

Do you know, I really have no idea who invented that glaze--if it was our potters, or somebody else's. House Tanaka has been a patron of kilns just about since the beginning, but most of them aren't on our country estate, so I haven't seen the craftsmen at work much."

"The Izaku library has been in place for several generations. They are an Agasha family charged with maintaining the joint Dragon-Phoenix library. The library's collection focuses on mystical studies and theological studies. The direct practice of shugenja magics and the broader theological context. I trained as a Loremaster with the Phoenix, and then was assigned to the library after graduation. My role was to support the general theological collection - both regarding the Fortunes and the Tao. It has been a wonderful joint venture."

Then she turned to Doji-san.

Hmm, then this venture is new, but going well and may explain their desire to expand the experiment. "I wonder what other joint ventures may be of benefit eventually. We have been in talks with the Scorpion for some collaboration between the Asahina medical specialists and those of the Shosuro, perhaps by next winter, we will be discussing some variety of Imperial medical academy for sharing such things."

"But you asked of the topic of the afternoon, and I've sidestepped right off in to libraries and court maneuvers." She laughs. "I'm afraid the winter's focus catches us all up as we get busy. I know there's been some scholarship among the Dragon, as it seems a bit more of a common interest for monks than most."

As Yuna also reaches to include Shinnosuke in her conversation, Hoshiko also turns her attention to include her fellow Crane.

Shinnosuke offers a bow to the hostess. "Thank you for putting together this most inspiring party, Yamada-san." With a nod to Yuna, he adds, "Rather as Agasha-san was saying, it's so interesting to see all these items of beauty and use from across the Empire. And to see the familiar ones through someone else's eyes. I daresay this is rather a good complement to Yasuki-san's art display yesterday--not things purpose-made by the Clans in a few days, but lovely old things we've all carried and used for many years."

"It is a lovely complement to the art show," she agreed.

"And to the initial gift giving. There, we saw how both newly made and ancient objects could be treasures fit for an Empress. The object, the story, the hands that once crafted or held it ... all woven together."

"I remember Doji-san you gave the fan made by the monk Honsen, painted with sacred cypresses. I thought it was such a lovely choice to feature the art of a monk, rather than a member of your own clan, as flawless as your own clan's art always is. It seemed so reverent to me. And that we shared the same values of piety, peace, and prosperity. And my sense of connection to you from it is nothing compared to the Empress' reaction. And that is now part of the fan's story, too. That she acknowledged it, claimed it, held it in her own hand."

"And you, Asahina-san, you gave the incense sticks, made from an ancient recipe. Another connection of object to maker, but in this case, the maker of the recipe. As the yohen bowl speaks to the first creator of that unusual glaze. And I thought, she values piety and serenity. And that made me glad, too."

"I felt so nervous that first day. Each thing that made me think I might have something in common with the giver, by intuition from their choice of gift, gave me ease and the hope we'd have a chance to talk further."

Hoshiko nods. "I love that comparison of the events, and I'm glad that we could make so many displays of different arts happen this winter. I suppose it's very Crane to say that art speaks long after our diplomats go home to their gardens."

She pauses to appreciate Sayomi's tale tied to her fan.

Ohhh...what if he's a monkey now! Old fool! How am I ever going to know!

"And I'm appreciating even more how, no matter how much of ourselves we put into our art, it isn't complete until someone sees and responds to it somehow. And that they may not respond to the message we intended." She gestures toward Sayomi, holding the fan open. "I doubt whoever painted that had any thought of that tale, but they mesh just fine."

"Hopefully there will be more opportunities for art and performance before the winter court is over. It's been such a pleasure."
With a slightly deprecating laugh, Shinnosuke says, "I'm quite flattered you recall that first day, Agasha-san. It seems so long ago already." He can't help but harbor some mixed feelings about that fan, himself--it is a beautiful object, and he'd been so elated when the Former Empress accepted it, but... now she's the Former Empress, so the wish for health and longevity it represented hadn't exactly been realized. Still...

"That is the beauty of old things, isn't it? I suppose they build up layers, like the patina on your clanmate's silver cup." The hand not holding his teacup gestures gracefully at Agasha Sanjuro's sake cup offering. "If we only valued new things, or things made by people just like us, we would miss a great deal of beauty."

He too leans a bit closer to look at the fan, imagining for a moment a monkey swinging from the stately branch of the pictured cherry tree.

She smiled, a little shyly. "My memory is rather ... reliable. Are you a follower of the Tao? That you honored the artistry of the monk?"

"It is important to not miss beauty. 'Appreciation of beauty is the beginning of wisdom.'"
