Jinkan had risen in the night to a strange urge.
He was no stranger to urges, of course.
But this one was different. He felt a deep and abiding hunger, something deep within, gnawing, relentless, bottomless, emptiness that cried for satiation, and he was powerless to resist.
Struggling to his feet, he lurched left and barrelled through the shoji exterior wall of Dragon House, hot-footing it in all his glory, tongue lolling, scars sloughing saliva in great streams, toward the kitchens.
And there, the night staff scattered in all directions as he launched himself over the pass-through window and stormed to the larder. He began to gorge.
And then...
There was no one left to observe...
but he lurched, food spilling from his mouth, and flopped forward onto his face. He spun, his face planted to the ground, and his legs thundering in a great circle. And then he stopped stock still, his ear cocked vertically. A great voice echoed within his mind. A voice of injured refinement. A voice that overthrew mere hunger and introduced a new concept. Pride. There was only one thing to do...
