I was glad to hear that you were among those chosen to represent our clan at Winter Court this year. I too, was fortunate enough to be chosen - admittedly, with considerable help from the influence of others. I hope we can make this season a successful one for our clan and family.

It will be good to see you again. I still remember viewing the cherry blossoms in Sunda Mizu. If I can be of any assistance to you while we’re at court, you need only say.

A friendly letter

An answer comes in a letter in kozo paper, folded rather simply and similarly tied in blue cord - the shade a bit lighter than the one used by Ryoichi. A dried Iris flower is pressed at the bottom of the sheet.

Dear cousin Shiozaki Ryoichi,

Thank you kindly for your gracious letter. I was similarly happy to see your name among our clan's delegates - I remember hearing only good things about Shiozaki-san in our previous meetings, however short. The cherry blossoms were beautiful - it's a pity I couldn't see them this year! Have you been? I've heard you spent longer in Hida lands lately?

I can only imagine what a challenge it would be to search for Imperial Winter Court appointments unsupported by influence of one sort of another, ne? If a choice for us was made, the right one it must be - I am confident in our ability to prove the clan right in that regard. Please count on me as well while we're at court - it's much easier to stand up the eight time when one is not alone, ne?

I look forward to seeing you soon. Perhaps our entourages might meet before we reach Scorpion lands? It might be good to talk about some things before the Winter Court starts proper, time and weather allowing.
