Other Houses, Other Clans
Other Houses, Other Clans
A List of All of the Houses in the Empire.
It is the convention that the house that currently holds the daimyoship takes the name of the founder of the Family. In most cases, that is because of simple descent. In some, it is a clear case of usurpation.
To begin with, some of these houses are statted, but the majority are mentions in other houses' descriptions or the houses of marriage candidates and are largely undefined. You may, if you wish, choose any of them for your character to be from, or you can generate a house of your own using the eminently enjoyable house creation rules in the Rules forum. Any house name you make up in the course of generating a house or character--even if it is a throwaway mention--will find its way here.
Also, feel free to make connections between your character's house and any of these, whether as entities to fill out advantages or disadvantages, or to explain those Defeat or Conquest events in your house's history. We will incorporate the information. Houses generated by players will be marked with an asterisk. The player in question should be consulted for connections, and also if you want to play characters from their house.

The Akazawa family was born in a 20 goblin winter during the reign of Hantei Bosai. The abandoned mile-castle of a house that had been wiped out in an encounter with an oni that ate of flesh and earth in great gulps. The Akazawa were able to prosper for a time, but continued encounters with the Shadowlands have progressively sapped it of strength. They suffered terribly during the invasion of 375, and a curiously localized plague finished off nearly half of the local heimin in 400. While the instigator of the plague, a maho-tsukai masquerading as a sensei of the Akodo style, was caught and killed, Akazawa Ineji was never able to recover his faith in people and spent the rest of his years a paranoid tyrant. His repressive policies, carried on by his daughter and grand-daughter, eventually provoked a revolt just 5 years ago that ended in the deaths of 4 of Akazawa Hana’s children and the massacre of the remaining peasant population of the district. To say that the Akazawa’s problems have been solved would be madness, however, for without the watchful and productive heimin, the countryside has reverted to lawless wilderness, choked with banditry, plagued by goblin sightings (and worse!), and without an adequate defense force. The Akazawa need resources and to restore order if they are going to survive.

Big ideas: Famous story of lord and house guard fighting to the death against the Thrane.
Modus vivendi with their peasants: almost a unionized peasant force. The samurai do not hold themselves above the rest of the people.
House Kato was formed by the Kami Hida during the reign of Hantei Genji when Hida Kato single-handedly put a marauding ogre band to flight in a tremendous scrap, fortunately witnessed by two monks who carried the story back to Hantei Genji. Kato’s eldest son was a model manager, helping to cement the family’s hold over its new territory and codify a modus vivendi with the non-samurai living there. Unfortunately, his children had none of their father’s wisdom, and during the tightening of samurai control over society that began late in the reign of Genji, provoked a major revolt whose aftershocks still affect relations between the Kato and their peasants. Indeed, so brutal were the reprisals against the peasants that it sparked a reaction born of regret in Kato Sanefusa, who took it upon himself to tear down elements of his own castle as a sign that he, unlike his father, did not hold himself apart from the people. His actions led to a migration of peasants to Kato territory over the next two generations, which did much to stabilize the region’s economy, but also increased the mass that could rise against the Kato if they slipped from their new path.
During the Gozoku era, Kato Tomiko raised the profile of her house by winning a duel against a prominent Scorpion Gozoku member, preventing this man from pushing through a proposal to disestablish a Shinseist shrine linked to monks that had been caught smuggling messages from Otosan Uchi. The corresponding rise in profile stood the Kato in good stead during the reign of Hantei Yugozohime, at least until White Stag. The lord of the Kato family had been in the middle of negotiating with the Thrane for firearms to use against the Shadowlands when news broke of the imminent arrest of the gaijin. Kato Eichi was killed while resisting being taken hostage by the Thrane. Unfortunately, this simply made the Kato mad. Their house guard swore revenge, commandeered a merchant vessel, and stormed a Thrane ship during the ensuing Battle of the Raging Seas. They died to a man, further destabilizing the house, but the name of Kato has become an enduring part of the story of White Stag to this day.

House Kishida was founded by the karo of the former Sanzaemon house after every living member was killed in a bungled attempt to attack the rear of a Shadowlands army engaging a large Hida force. That’s the official story, anyway. In reality, while a large number of the Sanzaemon did, in fact, lose their lives in that battle, Kishida Fuichi may also have arranged for the murder of the sole survivor upon her return to Shiro Sanzaemon. Unbeknownst to Fuichi, Sanzaemon Imeko is still very much alive, hiding out in the countryside, biding her time, building her strength…

House Terada of the Hiruma was founded when a fifth son of the main branch of the Hiruma line scored a large shipment of gaijin powder from the Merenae before they were expelled. He was, of course, absolutely disgraced when the Merenae were found to be a malign influence on Rokugan, but his family continues to experiment with the stuff with the backing of the main branch, hoping to discover the secret of its manufacture and gain a major leg up on the Shadowlands.

Shintani had been his village’s sage in the years before the fall of the kami, calculating the progress of the seasons, directing the planting, and presiding over the ceremonies that marked the stages of his peoples’ lives. When Kaiu, a man from his village, passed his test and became a chief retainer of the kami Hida, Shintani followed and became the master of his own house when he helped the Crab overcome the recalcitrant neighboring tribes. Unfortunately, his descendants were not the heroes their ancestor had been. Shintani Teruo threw in with Fu Leng during the First War out of a sense of grievance against Kaiu. His grandson Moro was little better than a bandit, but his silver tongue kept justice at bay in spite of the protests of his people. Lady Shintani Rei’s inspired defense of White Mountain castle during the First Yasuki War was undermined when her own daughter sold out the garrison to the Crane in exchange for her life. And then, of course, Shintani Fumiko’s alcohol-fueled assault on a critic of her art installation made her family personae non gratae in civilized courts for several years. Indeed, their family history would seem to have been a litany of tired defeats and inexorable decline were it not for the genius of Lady Shintani Honoka, who deployed O-yumi with jade-tipped bolts to bring down a pair 60’ oni that threatened Shiro Hiruma, leaving its followers to be mopped up by the relief army marching from Kyuden Hida. The great bows remain mounted on the walls of the Hiruma castle, ready to bring down the next titanic monstrosity to dare approach. Honoka’s bright spot has, of late, been eclipsed by a long series of failed initiatives and poorly managed gambits that have left Shintani lands entirely lawless and have significantly harmed the Shintani’s wealth and standing. Lady Rina needs to turn this around, and fast.

Treachery (-2 inf, -6 law, -1 pow)
The Tsumura were initially a band of ronin that received samurai status from the Kuni after successfully routing (at high cost) an ogre tribe that had settled and tenaciously defended a portion of southwestern Kuni lands. Despite having no shugenja or gift for speaking with the kami in their number, the Tsumura were able to integrate into the Kuni relatively seamlessly thanks to their extremely flexible worldview. However, their easy transition brought them under suspicion from a much older, more established house, the Tamanaha, that felt that they were losing influence to the “jumped-up ronin.” Through rumor and innuendo, the older house was able to receive sanction to conduct a thorough investigation of the Tsumura’s past, their possible affiliations with the ogre tribe that they displaced, and the possibility that some of them may have succumbed to the temptation posed by the Shadowlands. The Tsumura suffered greatly under the attention of their rivals, and developed a bitter rivalry toward them. They spent a generation rebuilding the house, biding their time, waiting for an opportunity, then supplanted their rivals in the Kuni Daimyo’s esteem by shaming them when they saved their castle from an attack by a particularly nettlesome oni.
That was some time ago, however, and while the Tsumura like to paint a picture that their house has sailed along prosperously since then, the truth is rather more sordid. As more and more shugenja were born into the household through their marriages with more established Kuni families, a little of the Kuni madness seemed to seep in as well. Twice now, prominent members of the family have been discovered dabbling in maho. The first, Lady Tsumura’s younger sister, was trying to increase efficiency in rice production on the house’s lands by inviting the ancestors to lend a hand. The second, the heir of the house, felt like she knew where her aunt had gone wrong and refined the ritual, sacrificing her younger sisters to create more durable vessels for the ancestors of the house. These scandals have seriously damaged the house’s reputation in the Kuni family, and leftover zombies and vigilante bands of peasants still plague the more remote places in their lands.

Lady Masuya Juko and her family recently received samurai status, having eliminated banditry in their district by tackling persistent issues of poverty. While occasionally troubles find their way to the valleys that have banded together under the Masuya, the troublemakers usually find themselves absorbed—stuck in Lady Masuya’s carefully managed economic web. This is not to say that the Masuya are without their troubles; the Shadowlands loom ever large in Kuni territory, and the Masuya are no strangers to the tragedies that come with the Duty of the Crab. Lady Masuya’s brother and all his children have died in the wars. And there is another problem–the rampant jealousy of her neighbors. Forced to watch a jumped-up peasant run circles around them, the old guard has drawn close their ranks and made it a point to exclude the Masuya socially. Lady Juko would not normally pay them much mind, but all it takes for fortunes to fall is a bad word in the ear of Kuni Mirabu, so Lady Juko is understandably quite concerned.

Born after the ji-samurai Shiozaki Hana discovered the Kolat conspiracy and exposed it to prominent members of the Yasuki Family. The Shiozaki were given the holdings of a compromised family that had been put to the sword.
Their reactionary assertion of the celestial order on the old, potentially compromised peasant and merchant classes of their new territories has led to simmering tensions, including possibly some trouble among their own retainers. Fortunately, no one has made any overt moves, but in this war of ideology, the Shiozaki may not be out of the woods yet.

The Nakatani are descended from Yasuki’s fourth son’s marriage to a prominent lady of Doji’s people. The original Lord Nakatani, Yasuki’s grandson, was the sole survivor of his line from an attack by a sea-going oni during the first war against the Shadowlands and the occupation of his family’s lands by a horde of bakemono. While he managed to oust the goblins during the rout that followed the victory of the 7 Thunders over Fu Leng, the family spent four generations recovering from the tremendous loss of property and people during that war. In more recent years, the house was part of the Yasuki that defected to the Crab clan. During the Daidoji’s attempt to recapture the Yasuki, Nakatani Castle’s refusal to surrender bought time for the Crab armies to fully deploy to Yasuki lands. In the end, the Daidoji were forced to bypass the Nakatani in order to deploy against the Crab and the castle was spared destruction. In the current era, Nakatani Fumiko is one of Yasuki Amiko’s primary supporters, particularly in the matter of her economic innovations. The Nakatani receive many blessings from their Daimyo in return for their investment of wealth and influence, as is only proper.

The Maeharas were distant cousins of the old and storied Nishimura family. They came to inherit their cousins’ estate after the childless lord of the Nishimura was killed in a duel over a libelous poem he had composed about the involvement of a rival house–the Ikehara–with the gaijin prior to White Stag. They may not have the gravitas of their doomed cousins, but neither do they carry around their karma. That is not to say that there are no problems for the house. Its principal branch has not managed to produce an heir, leading to some questions about which of Lady Maehara’s siblings will succeed her and how soon. Additionally, their neighbors, the Murata family, have been maneuvering against Lady Maehara’s siblings’ claims by spreading rumors about famous affairs Lady Maehara’s father may have been involved in. Of course, no one professes to believe in these stories, but wise observers know that a widely disregarded rumor can provide more than enough pretext for action when a house becomes too weak to provide a reason for people not to change their minds. The future of the family, then, might be very interesting indeed.

Re: Other Houses, Other Clans
House Imagawa of the Doji
Imagawa was a warrior and a companion of Kakita during the events of the founding of the Empire. He distinguished himself by defeating a recalcitrant chieftain in single combat, winning over his tribe through the display of swordsmanship and skill. As a reward, Lady Doji permitted his descendants to bear his name in addition to her own.
Imagawa's grandson Himeji was a favorite of Doji Nio during the time following Lady Doji's disappearance. His fascination and scholarship on legal matters allowed him to have great influence over the development of the Doji Magistrates. In the end, he would be one of the sources referred to by Saibankan when the Fortune of Justice was devising the Charter of the Emerald Magistrates. In recognition, he and his house were rewarded with lands.
The Imagawa were nearly wiped out when their forces were defeated by a Matsu house and their estate (at this time a magnificent house and piece of territory in the western Osari plain), was burned to the ground. Several prominent members of the family were killed in battle or shortly afterwards, and the house became landless when the Matsu refused to return the territory. They were saved only by their close relationship with the main Doji line, which put them up in one of their mansions at Kyuden Doji.
The Imagawa were incensed by Imperial meddling in internal Crane matters when it was revealed that Hantei Fujiwa provoked the Yasuki War. Doji Retsu of the Imagawa, already a skilled figure in the Imperial Court, became a powerful exponent of the plot to make the Emperor a figurehead. Needless to say, he was executed when the Gozoku were exposed and purged.
Lord Retsu's son Atoshi was a financial genius, but suffered from strange habits. He frequently forgot basic human functions like eating and sleeping and spent much of his time in conversation with himself. Toward the end of his short life, he imagined himself an actual waterbird and fed solely on the uncooked diet of true cranes. That his eccentricities did not cost the family even more of their influence was a testimony to how well he understood koku.
During the last twenty years, Lady Kichime of the Imagawa has distinguished herself by being one of the few Crane courtiers who can command the attention of the Imperials in the courts. Although her family was deeply involved in the Gozoku, there is something about Kichime's brightness and enthusiasm that makes it difficult to hate her specifically. While Retsuhime's ire (and Otomo Keihime's assiduous political activity) could never permit Kichime to attain high office, she remains a powerful support to the Emerald Champion and to the Crane agenda, such as it is. The fortunes of the house have grown as a result. In order to facilitate her work, the Imagawa have been allowed to move to a mansion in Otosan Uchi.

Kitagawa was one of Kakita’s original companions who accompanied him on his journey out of the north, but struggled more than most with the transition from their itinerant lifestyle to settled life in the Crane clan. He gave his life battling alongside Lord Akodo during the Battle of Otosan Uchi, an act which led to a great deal of cooperation between Akodo and Kitagawa’s children. Kitagawa’s heir made use of this connection to secure Akodo’s assistance in pacifying the more chaotic territories that his father had let go to seed, and though some of the stability gained during that cooperation was lost the next generation during a conflict with House Koike of the Kakita, the territory the Kitagawa tore out of the hands of their neighbors has never been lost.
The reign of Hantei Bosai saw the Kitagawa expand at the expense of the Maruyama family followed by a period of development. The next two generations, however, were particularly interesting. Consider for a moment Kitagawa Ineji, whose legendary intrigues against the Otomo family (inspired by his erroneous assumption that the Otomo had created the Yasuki crisis) helped to isolate Hantei Fujiwa during the latter part of his reign, creating the conditions that Bayushi Atsui would exploit to undermine Hantei Kusada. Ineji also brought about the submission of the Koike family by arranging for the murder of several of the more dynamic members of the family and the blackmail of several others. His daughter, Kitagawa Kimita, was as ruthless as her father, but somewhat more cruel. She famously kept her family from involvement with the Gozoku (through a campaign of terror against two of her uncles), perhaps because she was unwilling to risk her family’s historic close relationship with the Akodo family. She was nevertheless responsible for a purge of “radicalized peasants,” people she suspected were part of Bayushi Atsui’s network of spies and informants. She may well have been right about some of them. Her activities caused a private conflict between the Kitagawa and the Crane Champion for the first time, but nothing was said in public. Of course, this had the pleasant effect of insulating the family against the backlash when the Gozoku collapsed.
Kimita’s daughter, however, was not so shrewd. She became deeply involved with the Merenae, and was forced to abdicate her position when it was revealed that she had carried on an affair with one of the Cornejo brothers. The sting of that disgrace seems to have alleviated recently, as Kitagawa Atsushi has made a name for himself as the Emerald Magistrate for West Hub village, where the Imperial Taxes are gathered and accounted for each year. He has proven an exceptionally reliable pair of hands, and what the family has failed to gain because of his refusal to skim or play favorites they have more than made up through the sea of powerful samurai who wish to be his friend.

Elevated by Hantei Bosai after the lord of the previous house angered him with a pro-Shinseist proposal.
Was completely unequal to the task of government, lost territory and retainers to previous lord’s rivals.
Became involved with the Gozoku in an attempt to secure Doji Raigu’s favor and support against their rivals. Were unable to mitigate their guilt when the conspiracy collapsed, and suffered significantly throughout the reigns of Yugozohime, Muhaki, and Retsuhime.
Maruyama Hineko has pulled them back from the brink through adroit management of her sisters, each of which has managed to secure a position in ambassador’s offices to a Great Clan. This exposure to a wealth of information has allowed her to begin to reverse the damage previous generations have caused, though she still has a long way to go.

The Sato are a house of famous bushi and administrators. Founded as a cadet branch of the Mamura family during the reign of Hantei Bosai, Sato Mitsu, the family’s second lord, distinguished himself as a leading tactical theorist and was rewarded with management of a mile castle on the edge of Yasuki territory. The tradition of commitment to the defense of southern Crane lands continued through the Yasuki War and countless minor skirmishes along the borders of the Crab and Scorpion, incessant conflicts that required the family to expand their fort into a much more sizable fortification. More recently, the Sato were embroiled in a conflict with an economic rival–the Takahashi house of the Daidoji–that rapidly escalated into outright war. Boxed in by a series of political errors, the Lord Soh ended up being unable to take a position of restraint and maintain face. He defeated the Takahashis in a pair of pitched battles and forced a settlement in which a great deal of koku (and a smaller piece of land) changed hands. Officially, the dispute is over. Invasion/Revolt (-7 law, -1 population, -3 power, -1 wealth)

The Isa family came about as a result of the purges that rocked the Crane clan after the fall of the Gozoku. In the war of words and spin that shaped that era, anyone could frame a narrative to shake the foundations of a mighty house. The Isa were a small family of ji-samurai who owed fealty to a much more powerful house–the Hiraoka. Officially, the Isa were unnerved that the Lord of the Hiraoka seemed to be getting away with the crimes against Shinseist monks they had perpetrated during the Gozoku’s crackdown on the Emperor’s messengers. A word or two in the right ears, and the Isa received formal sanction to take retribution on their former masters on behalf of a grateful Daidoji Daimyo. They wiped out the Hiraoka and took over administration of their lands Unofficially, of course…but then, what does it matter whether the Hiraoka had, in fact, torn down a monastery or not? With no monks alive to tell the tale, and no Hiraoka to claim that there had been no monks in the first place, the situation had resolved itself nicely.
Or had it? Two years ago, a long-lost granddaughter of the Hiraoka–or someone claiming to be one–appeared at Lady Daidoji’s court. Events since then have taken a rather negative turn for the Isa. This “Hiraoka” girl married a prominent business rival of Lady Isa’s eldest son, who used her claims to force the Isa out of their castle, killing a good number of the extended family, shattering their standing at court, and destabilizing their claims to noble status in the process. The Isa are, consequently, in a very dangerous position, with far fewer friends than they thought they had just a year ago. Fortunately, great wealth can buy a fair few of those, even if they have to go looking outside the clan for people who might not care too much about a dodgy pedigree.

House Tani of the Asahina

Defeat (-3 defense, -2 influence, -6 lands, -1 population, -3 power, -2 wealth)

Victory (+4 defense, +3 influence, +4 power)

Favor (+5 influence, +2 lands, +5 law, +2 power)
Windfall (+5 defense, +7 influence, +2 lands, +2 law, +5 population, +4 power, +9 wealth)
A house with some pull on the Imperial scale, the Tani were originally a Yasuki house that arose out of the chaos of the Yasuki war. They spent some time as quasi-Daidoji, but their territory was eventually incorporated into that granted to Isawa Asahina when he joined the Crane clan. Their history has been a somewhat checkered one. Having clawed their way out of the wreckage of the system of relationships that was the Yasuki family and through sheer doggedness held on to some of their holdings, they were able to parlay their familiarity with the lands and territories around what would become Shinden Asahina into positions close to the main Asahina line—and then they squandered the relationship by needlessly meddling in the finances of the greater Family. A series of over-reaches and mismanaged gambits left them at the political mercy of an ambitious Daimyo, who ensured that they spent a generation in the cold. His passing, however, has given the Tani the opportunity to expand their interests once again.
Having chosen the right side in the events leading up to White Stag–largely for economic reasons, the Tani were not at that time in a position to make investments in gaijin technology or goods–the Tani stood to benefit from their rivals’ lost revenues and compromised reputations. They parlayed this into several lucrative deals with Crab, Daidoji, and especially Mantis merchant patrons eager to recoup their losses with quick loans from the wealthy Asahina, and in the process have established an inter-clan client network that has engendered no small amount of jealousy and some bitterness among other Asahina houses, particularly those who find all of this interest in finance a tad unseemly for members of what is supposed to be a priestly Family.

House Yamada came to be as members of the Isawa family. ji-Samurai, in fact, in service to Isawa Asahina. When Asahina took his people to form the Asahina Family of the Crane clan, Yamada Ayano followed, but, unwilling to leave his lord defenseless now that he had embraced pacifism, Ayano adopted a large number of his ashigaru into his family. These then became full samurai upon the Yamada’s elevation to full samurai status. Over time, the Yamada have more or less adopted the Asahina philosophy, but those initial years of uncertainty have left a mark. The Yamada are some of the more genetically diverse of the Asahina lineage. They also have a closer relationship with their peasantry than other houses–after all, distant familial relationships have crossed social boundaries in their past. This has occasionally caused trouble with the more hide-bound of their neighbors, but the relatively large and stable territories under their administration have kept the Yamada in the good graces of the main branch of the Asahina family for most of their history.

The Oshima family is descended from one of Mirumoto’s first students. He dedicated himself to the hard work of constructing the roads of the Mirumoto provinces, which coincidentally all converge on Oshima castle. The resulting trade network ensures the house’s wealth and political influence (the center of trade also often being the center of communications). The past several hundred years have been good to the Oshima, who have brokered information and adroitly profited from the rivalries among the more minor Mirumoto houses. The events of the few years, however, have taken them quite by surprise. An important unit of theirs was among those that accompanied the Mirumoto Daimyo and the Master of Niten during the journey that ended with Mirumoto Takeda’s heroic self-sacrifice. This unit disappeared in the confusion. Though Mirumoto Tsukahara’s staff claim that they, too, gave their lives heroically and have conferred honors on their names, the fact that the beloved heir of the Oshima house was among their number has left a rather sour taste in Oshima Junichi’s mouth. While he trains his niece to take his place, he has begun to ask questions about exactly what happened that day in the mountains.
